english backlinks for local non-english website
can they hurt your ranking? or it doesn't really matter? or it will just be less effective but still be good? is there a difference if the links are from profile, social bookmarking, edu, blog commenting(always in relation to the language)?
a lot of questions in my noob mind :). thanks for help

I've had few sites in non-English language and I only used English social bookmarking and social networking sites to build backlinks and so far got desirable results but then again, my keywords had minimal competition.

Just use your specific keyword, it works very well.
Else, I would keep in track that +50% off the backlinks are from ones country.

Lastly, I would stay away from eastern country links like .ru etc. as from there the most spam comes from. But this is s.th. I have heard off an Guru SEO and it's not tested, but it sounds plausible.
