How are different versions of a site treated for SEO purposes? For instance, if I have an English version that I focus my efforts on, but also a German version, will my efforts on one carry over to the other? I suppose this is back to the perennial debate about whether G ranks sites or pages, but I'm interested to hear your thoughts/experience.

I believe that google also statistically evaluates a domain. So if you have a lot of valid content concerning a certain topic, there will be an effect.

In your case it might be beneficial to have that extra German content if you interlink between German and English versions properly. However, I would not invest in such an approach solely for SEO-purposes.

Thanks. Not really launching something in German for SEO, per se, because I already have the german version on the same domain...so there is a language=en and language=de extension on that domain and they each cater to different audiences.

I'm just wondering, because they cater to different markets, whether efforts I take on the language=de pages, will also contribute positively to the language=en (and vice-versa).

Clearly, I'm going to be hitting different keywords, as press releases, videos, etc will use the German equivalent keywords. I'm thinking that it might have a beneficial effect, but I cannot prove that and I wondered if any members have a better idea of how it may or may not work. (At least it might help alexa rank though given the new traffic it would generate.) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
