Pretty standard story starting off, been lurking and reading intently for months. It's my first time doing any IM and so I'm going to be trying out a variety of things/concepts and see what works and what doesn't. Obviously different niches require different approaches.

Veeery slowly I've been doing some niche/keyword research and putting together a site but it's been going too slowly. I'm sick of my job and working hard for someone else and not seeing any return. Also, as do all good stories, this story involves a girl. I spent the last year and a bit putting all my time and energy into trying to take care of this girl and make her happy. I ended up low on savings, depressed, and hadn't seen a lot of friends in months. And you know what? I was the only one to blame because I should have been focusing on myself. If you put all your time and energy into someone else and something happens, you're left with nothing.

I've chosen IM because I know if I stick with it and push like I've done in other things in my life I can kick ass and live the life I've always wanted. It also reminds me of gaming where you're constantly bombarded by stats and feedback and "You levelled up!" notifications.

My strengths have always been analyzing things, getting involved, and finding out what works best and then helping teach others. It's the reason I've excelled quickly at a lot of things in life and moved up to positions of leadership. While I like doing this and it gives me great joy, I realize that right now I don't have any experience and only know what I've read.

I'll try to keep things here brief and informative so that you can follow along on my journey, hopefully start your own and most importantly, be inspired to take charge of your own life and never give up! Also, it's a good place to write down daily goals, updates, etc. Things will be organized into projects so you can see what is doing what.

I've saved up $4,000 while researching and reading on the sidelines so I've got a healthy budget to start and experiment with.

    OVERALL PLAN

    Project: DERP DERP

First project, probably not the best niche because I only really see adsense as a way of generating money from it so if I get banned for whatever reason the site is useless. Also niche seems very shallow so not too many possible articles without being repetitive, hence the name DERP DERP.

Make niche site w/ adsense driving the revenue. 1500 word landing page targeting main keyword, w/ 3 supporting categories with 4-5 x 500 word articles each. Going to start with just 4-5 articles total and then post the rest until all are posted to make Google happy the site is updated.

Strong on-page SEO with each article targeting specific keywords and using LSI keywords in the article. Relevant images at the start of each post with ALT-tags and strong internal linking.

Track site from day 1 using Google Analytics and requesting pages be crawled using Google Webmaster Tools.

    Use proxies for link building.

    Link buliding:
    - Build Web 2.0's with decent-ish quality 500 word articles, some just 1 page, some 2 page sites.
    - using link indexing in ScrapeBox to get the backlinks built indexed faster.
    - Article directory submissions
    - Blog commenting
    - Crappier tier 2 web 2.0 articles directing to tier 1 web 2.0's
    - Once things get going and when/if I need a boost I'll look into buying expired domains for a PBN and boosting it with more web 2.0's

It's not a very social niche so no social bookmarking.

    SOFTWARE, ETC.

KeywordRevealer (keyword research / difficulty comparison)
KWFinder (keyword research / difficulty comparison)
    Dragon Naturally Speaking (content writing)
    TreePad (organizing articles/categories for sites)
Google Sheets (for tracking/managing backlinks and budgetting)
AutoFill Magic (for creating Web 2.0's)
ScrapeBox (scraping content, images, proxies, forum posts, blog posts, etc.)

Day 1 goals and progress update will start tomorrow (I gotta run to work)! ^_^

    Let's do this!!!

Thanks for the support guys! :D I checked out your post @TheFreshPrince, definitely resonated with me but you also have to consider that with IM you can't rush things (otherwise Google gets mad) so at some point when you're drip feeding backlinks you're probably going to cap out on the amount of time you can devote to that project so you can work on multiple ones! This will pretty much be my notebook here but one thing I forgot to mention in my original post is that I'm using Evernote as well to record some basic notes on what I find in the forums here.

    STARTING POINT

I've done the keyword research and picked out the main keywords I want to target for all my articles. I wasn't really interested in the niche at all and that's probably why it has taken me so long to make any sort of real progress on this project so I hired a writer to do some of the writing for me. I wrote three of the article so far that I thought would be easiest to do and still have two more to write about everything else is done so far. I've also picked up the domain name, which is an exact matching domain name for my main keyword. I have to proofread a lot of the articles still and put them in a format which works well with WordPress. I noticed some grammatical mistakes so far on the major article that I need to correct.

    Shared Purchases:
    - Dragon NaturallySpeaking ($70 - after coupon)
    - Keyword Revealer Subscription ($29.97)

    Shared Subtotal = $99.97

    DERP DERP Purchases:
    - 1x1500 word article + 8x500 word articles (from FIVER for $57.50)
    - DreamHost 1 year hosting w/ free domain ($59.40 - after coupon)

Project DERP DERP Subtotal = $116.90

TOTAL = $216.87 (wow, didn't realize it was that much already. These things add up... o_O )

    DAY 1 GOALS

    Project: DERP DERP

I had a busy day today and just doing some basic life stuff, so today's goals will be pretty simple as I don't have a lot of time. This is my first time setting up a proper WordPress site so I'm going to do a little bit of looking into installing the right plug-ins and installing a WordPress theme. I have chosen to use the thesis WordPress theme because that is very well designed for AdSense. I found thesis 2.0.1 in the download section so hopefully that works. I don't quite want to shell out money for actually buying it at this point because I've already spent a lot and I don't know how profitable this niche will be. In the future if this niche is profitable, I will probably shell out the money for it and some skins too. I did do some research into using heat map as well because I like the concept of how they incorporated A/B split testing to maximize results of the AdSense campaigns, but I couldn't find a decent free version of that in the download section.

    1) Install Thesis Theme (from member download's section)
    2) Install Plugins

    DAY 1

    Project: DERP DERP

    1) Installed Thesis Theme (from member download's section)
    - This was surprisingly easy to install. Basically just upload the zip file that I got and one click install. Also updates no problem to newest version! ^_^ (hoping they don't say anything later...)
    2) Installed Plugins
    - Yoast SEO (boosts SEO of pages)
    - Contact form 7 (makes contact form)
    - EWWW image optimizer (faster page load times, NOTE: This makes google happier)
    - Reduce bounce rate (reduces bounce rate, NOTE: this makes google happier)
    - Google XML Sitemaps (creates sitemap to help google bots index site better)
    - UpdraftPlus (backup maker for WP site)
    - WP Super Cache (easier to manage than w3 total cache and less server memory needs)
    - WordFence Security (protects website from botnets, login attempts, etc.)

    Notes:
    - I looked into installing WP Rocket (premium plugin) for the page speed loads but couldn't find it in the download's section.
    - Haven't looked into what's included in the Thesis theme, might need plugins for Google AdSense and Analytics

    DAY 2 GOALS:

    1) Fix up grammar in ordered articles
    2) Write meta-tag descriptions for first 5 articles

    4) Make Logo for Main Page Using Canva
    5) Find suitable public domain images for first 5 articles
    6) Setup Categories in Yoast
    7) Put in first 5 articles

Note: Will customize theme later while waiting for google to index my first pages and before I start some more involved link building

Probably won't have time to finish all these today before work, I'll have to see how early I get off work but I'm hoping if things go smoothly I'll be able to finish them all!

    DAY 2

    Project: DERP DERP

    DONE:
    1) Fix up grammar in ordered articles
    - Took way longer than I thought it would, ate up a lot of time
    2) Write meta-tag descriptions for first 5 articles
    - Done, also made titles for first 5 articles
    3) Sign up for Google AdSense and Analytics
    - Signed up for both, pretty simple. Note: don't do sign up for AdSense when you don't have content on your page yet, you will get rejected. (got the e-mail a few hours later)
    4) Make Logo for Main Page Using Canva
    - for some reason I struggled actually making the logo here but I think it was because the document size was using was too small. I spent a long time tinkering around with it and it just wasn't doing what I wanted it to. I will have to try again today with the larger document size and see if I can get it to work out better. The program looks really promising in terms of what it is capable of doing especially for main images for blogs.
    5) Find suitable public domain images for first 5 articles
    - Found some for all my planned articles, not just first 5. I'm thinking of changing up a few of them to customize them a little more for each page probably just slapping on a title or something.

    NOT DONE:
    6) Setup Categories in Yoast
    7) Put in first 5 articles

I spent a bit of time looking at the thesis theme as well inside of WordPress. And still little bit confused as to how I will have to customize it but I leave that for later.

My monthly subscription for KeywordRevealer renewed today so there went another $29.97.

    DAY 3 GOALS:

    1) Setup categories in Yoast
    2) Make the main page logo and customize images
    3) Upload the first five articles into WordPress with all of the pictures and interlinking.
Note: One thing I'm wondering is if it is okay if you go back and look at your articles later on once you have posted more relevant articles on your webpage and create more interlinking to those future articles with your old articles. Can anyone with some experience answer this? Does that help you or does Google frown upon that?
    4) Add analytics code (I think this would be really simple because I saw one thing in the thesis theme which puts it on all of your pages I think)
    5) Make changes in the .htaccess file for 301 and 404 redirects
    6) Get pages submitted to Google Webmaster tools
    7) Get ScrapeBox and submit to indexing sites and start learning how to use it for scraping proxies so 2.0's backlinks can be started in a week or so

    Go go go! ^_^

Answer 3: Google loves it and can help rankings. There's a thread here somewhere giving advice on it, by finding a good ranking page you can push other pages up SERPS by internal linking with good keyword anchor text. In fact, I would also see this as natural. Often a site would start small, but you add content and add more internal links

Thanks @cooper1210! I thought that was the case but just wanted to make sure!

    DAY 3

    Project: DERP DERP

    DONE:
    1) Setup categories in Yoast
    - turns out I remembered wrong, what I was trying to do was to setup the silo structure for the website overall and some of the first steps involve some configuration in Yoast SEO. There was a How-To guide on silo'ing I'm following from @splishsplash from a few months back. Looks like I will have to write two more articles to get it set up using pages. Going to make those first to get the silo structure down properly at least. Will be good to have more content as the niche is pretty small anyway.
    2) Make the main page logo and customize images
    - Made pictures/logo. Spent some time learning how to use Canva properly and trying out a few things. Changing document size really helped but also doing the tutorials for keyboard shortcuts helped give me a lot of the functionality I was looking for from Canva. Seems like a pretty good tool for quick custom image creation.
    3) Upload the first five articles into WordPress with all of the pictures and interlinking.
    - Articles are uploaded, I spent a good deal of time on formatting and rewording the titles and meta descriptions to be ideal for SEO (apparently my LSI titles/descriptions weren't good and Yoast wanted exact matches to my keywords).
    - First time doing this so it took a bit longer too, next ones will definitely proceed much faster

    NOTES:
    - Removed Google XML Sitemaps plugin because it conflicted with the one created by Yoast SEO
    - Added Nofollow all external links plugin (adds rel=nofollow to all links, low followed external linking helps SEO)

    NOT DONE:
    4) Add analytics code (I think this would be really simple because I saw one thing in the thesis theme which puts it on all of your pages I think)
    - leaving this step until silo structure is setup properly
    5) Make changes in the .htaccess file for 301 and 404 redirects
    6) Get pages submitted to Google Webmaster tools
    7) Get ScrapeBox and submit to indexing sites and start learning how to use it for scraping proxies so 2.0's backlinks can be started in a week or so

    DERP DERP: $0.00 ($0.00/hr)

    -------------------------------------------------------

    DAY 4 GOALS:

Got a buddy coming over later that I haven't seen for a while so going to be a pretty easy going day.

    1) Write 2 small (300ish word) articles for silo structure pages, don't really care about these ranking, mainly just some extra fluff content and to make google happy with the silo structure. I'm typically a slow writer and am not good with the whole spew a bunch of nonsense onto the page but as I don't really care too much I'm hoping these won't take too long.

    Extra bonus goals:
    2) Create Privacy Policy Page
    3) Create Contact Page (contact form 7 plugin should make this super easy)
    4) Create About Us article (300 words) and make page.
    5) Add analytics code
    6) Make changes in the .htaccess file for 301 and 404 redirects
    7) Get pages submitted to Google Webmaster tools
    8) Get ScrapeBox and submit to indexing sites and start learning how to use it for scraping proxies so 2.0's backlinks can be started in a week or so

    DAY 6

    Project: DERP DERP

    DONE:
    1) Make all the interlinking between existing articles.
    - again, this took a lot longer than I thought
    - several articles also didn't have enough uses of the keywords so I found places to put them in which took up more time. Decided I'm really not happy with the quality of the articles that were written from Fiverr. With what I know about readability now and how to write good content for SEO I'll probably try to write lots of proper articles that I can use as examples for whoever I hire later on.
    2) Create Privacy Policy Page
    - quick and dirty, used the policy page generator from Serprank
    3) Create Contact Page (contact form 7 plugin should make this super easy)
    - yup, contact form 7 just makes a code you can copy/paste into a page for your contact form
    4) Create About Us article (300 words) and make page.
    - Didn't quite make it to 300 words but it's the about us page and my site average article length is >300 by a decent margin, I feel like this looks more natural.
    5) Add analytics code
    - Easy, thesis theme has a spot for it to add it to all your pages
    6) Make changes in the .htaccess file for 301 and 404 redirects
    - Ended up just using a plugin that 301 redirects to the main page anytime anyone gets a 404 error, this saves link juice!
    7) Get pages submitted to Google Webmaster tools
    - pretty simple, uploaded sitemap as well and set country region and some other settings to make Google happy but still not seeing it indexed

    Bonus:
    8) Made a terms and conditions page
    9) Found a spot in the footer (took some time to find since I'm unfamiliar with how Thesis works) to add contact, about, privacy, and TOC pages
    10) Fixed up the sidebar to have some more links to pages rather than the default widgets/text
    11) Pinged the site on Pingler to try to get Google to crawl it faster.

    NOTES:
    - I'm using a separate Google account for all my website stuff but was also logged into my main personal one. At some point when I was doing the site verification it somehow grabbed my personal e-mail for it and made that the site owner. I think I'm going to have to start working with one account logged into each browser so I can still be logged into each one. I think Firefox also let's you run separate instances of FireFox to let you do something similar. I'll have to look into it. Basically just trying to avoid unnecessary footprints.
    - Did some reading about getting your site indexed faster and submitting it to blog directories is supposed to help, however, I read that Google has banned some of these and even penalizes you for using some of them... Hopefully that doesn't happen when I use ScrapeBox for indexing.

    DAY 7 GOALS:

    1) Get ScrapeBox and submit to indexing sites and start learning how to use it for scraping proxies so 2.0's backlinks can be started in a week or so
    2) Prepare a couple 400-500 word articles for first web 2.0's.

    DAY 7

    Project: DERP DERP

    DONE:
    1) Get ScrapeBox and submit to indexing sites and start learning how to use it for scraping proxies so 2.0's backlinks can be started in a week or so
    - spent some time idle waiting for scrapebox license to approve, then wasted a bunch of time trying to scrape public proxies and search for more public proxy lists
    - don't think I'll spend anymore time on that because it's something that will be required to be done over and over again. I feel like time would be better spent just buying proxies and/or setting up my own proxies (there's a guide here on BHW)
    - watched some youtube tutorials and videos on various features for scrapebox but seems it's all pretty useless without proxies

    NOTE:
Google crawled my site finally, nothing is indexed. I'll have to write an article to submit to some directories and get some of the backlinking going and develop a detailed backlinking campaign with targets/goals for the week.

    DAY 8 GOALS:

Note: Already spent 2 hours today still tinkering around with ScrapeBox public proxies.

    1) Buy some proxies.
    2) Buy TheBestSpinner. More money, sigh. I think it just seems like I'm spending a lot because I'm purchasing one-time things that can be used across many projects. I think with lots of nested spinning if I write a 1000 word article with different sections getting used/not used I can have quite a few very unique 500-ish word articles for my web-2.0's.
    3) Aim to write a long enough article such that I can have about 15x 500-word articles using TheBestSpinner.
    4) Find/submit same article a couple (5?) article directories with link to main page in the footer
    5) Start creating 4 web 2.0's! (won't include links yet, 3 articles - 1 about us, 1 article linking to external page like wikipedia, 1 article linking to money site), will add link back to money site in 4-5 days!
