Ok so I'm looking into starting an affiliate site around the topic of emergency preparedness and the survivalist / "preppers" movement.

I have done a little bit of research on the competition and there seems to be a fair few sites which have found success in this niche. There are a large number of products and affiliate schemes to promote, and those who are interested in such products are typically engaged and prepared to spend cash on their "hobby."

My question is, what is the best way to determine if there is to much competition to be viable? No competition is a bad sign, but when is it to much to be do-able? Also, any other input you might have on this choice of niche would be greatly appreciated. Anyone had any success? Do you think the niche might be to crowded? Any tips?

    Thanks so much,
    Sam

It's a good niche, you just have to repeat to your audience that catastrophic events are just around the corner and your info can save them. They spend money. Just look at what Alex Jones is doing, he's killing it in this niche.

About the competition - it's hard to say. Maybe you have a competitor here that will tell you it's hard, not worth the time, been there done that, no buyers here, no traffic, brands are dominating, my snitch told me etc... But they might do fine themselves. You just have to get your feet wet and try it for yourself. Do proper keyword research, try to rank "easiest" keyword and build from there.

Try use semrush and find out the keywords connected with your niche and than use semrush to find out the keywords your competitors use and you'll see the competitiveness.
    Niche is very interesting actually.

My brotherinlaw is one of these guys. They seem to be divided into two camps. One camp believes that they must arm themselves for the coming catastrophe, so they can defend themselves/take what they want. The other bunch wants to prepare for it by setting aside "survival" rations, building a shelter, and so on.

Unless you are selling arms and ammo. the second bunch is your target audience.

This group also has a slight overlap with outdoor sports types, hunters, and people who work in the outdoors.

When planning for this niche, also consider items that make life more comfortable outdoors, especially systems. Water filtration, composting toilets, 12 volt electrical systems, and so on are all expensive systems that people will try to build themselves, give them instructions and products for the build.

Add in exterme service items, like fenix flashlights (the TK70 with a charger and a set of batteries will set you back $250.00), hand held GPS, and things like that.

Go for an authority site, spend the time to do it right, and damn the competition. This should be a good niche to get into. Even if it takes a couple of years to bank, it will bank for decades.

    Unless the world ends.

    Competition wouldn't worry me

What would concern me is the low CPC and low number of advertisers

I build silo sites - so competition isn't a factor any more - but I do look for high CPC and lots and lots of advertisers

    Haha, great!

Thanks for the encouragement guys, its good to know that some people think it could end up being a winning niche. I needed that to pluck up the courage to invest the time and put it into action.

Thanks for the tip about SEM rush as well, will check it out now.

Anyone else got any bright ideas or comments?

Would the low CPC not be offset by the ability to offer high value (ish) affiliate products? I will do a bit of research into this when i get home though, thanks for the tip!

I like your idea and it's definitely worth it - as crazy as it sounds.

I use spyfu.com to check out keyword phrases - and its the search volume and number of advertisers that's vitally important

The search volume is fine - just that if there are not many advertisers, then its a bad sign

I go for niches with 30 or more advertisers every chance I get

definitely not 'too much competition' in this niche, or most niches

doubly true for this because the world actually is kinda coming apart at the seams so this will continue to be a growing industry for awhile

This niche is very doable, but you have to go for an authority site. This niche can be very profitable if you target certain locations.:) Quality survival equipment is very good, because it sells high. Checkout pathfinder, I know they have something along the lines of affiliates, it's a company run by a guy from Dual Survival, Dave Cartnerbury if I spelled it right.

I don't want to be that guy, but isn't it 'a bit' unethical to frighten other people and make profit based on their anxiety?

Almost went with this niche too, decided to try something easier for my first site. It did look like a good niche but will take a little while to rank.

You're being that guy, and preppers are already anxious and paranoid. Nothing unethical about it at all.

Yeah, right. Why not sell some heroine to the people on the streets with needles in their arms? Come on, they're already highly addicted... nothing unethical about it at all.

if you don't want to be that guy you're probably in the wrong line of work in general
