Let me get right to it... Here is how the dialogue began.

Monday 8-15-2011 - Work Wrote "There is a mandatory safety meeting that all employees must attend this coming saturday. All of you who are not scheduled to work that day are expected to attend. Meeting will start at 8am et cetera...

Wednesday 8-17-2011 - Work Wrote "The saturday meeting is no longer mandatory. However everyone is encouraged to attend. Breakfast will be served. Thanks."

Monday 8-22-2011 - Work Wrote "Attention all short haul drivers: There was a safety meeting scheduled this past saturday at our local terminal.
This is the first time we have ever made it optional for our employees to attend. To all of you who attended the meeting, your "Thank You" will be given to you this week. To All Other Driver: It is unfortunate that our drivers do not have the energy, the time nor feels that safety is a priority to include it in their schedule. Throughout the rest of this month, there will be "additional" safety training that you must complete. This is mandatory. If you fail to do it, you will not receive your guaranteed pay. All of you who had to work on saturday and were not able to attend, you are exempt from this.

So, they mandated a meeting. Unmandated it, then rediculed and added work load to us because we didn't attend this "Optional" meeting and threatened to dock our pay if we do not complete this additional work. Our guaranteed pay only includes our normal work load and nothing additional. So if we are asked to do anything outside of our normal work assignment it, then that extra work is included in our guaranteed pay, or if there is a certain threshold met we get paid extra money for doing the extra work. The boss totally created her own rule here because she got upset that only a couple of people showed up to this meeting. It seems we were all set up to fail here.

Your thoughts?

Your thoughts?

So what do you want? Someone to pat you on the back and say that
your employer is arsehole?

I don't know where you live or so but i would have told them that if was doing something not in my ordinary work plan i was to be paied 2x for spare time they try to steal. Actualy i think they have to schedual meetings within your work hours or pay you for overtime. Maybe something else is stated in you contract?

I already know they are assholes. I was asking the thoughts of people here in the forum. If you have a real thought about what happened then feel free to contribute. I do not need a pat on the back, thanks.

its pretty stupid but I dont know about unethical. they are rewarding those who went the extra mile. nothing wrong with that. However I can see how it makes for some bad blood the way they did it. I think they could have been a little nicer about the whole thing and not bashed those who didn't attend.

I too am all for rewarding the ones that attended. What I am confused about is how is how can they make the meeting optional, then punish the ones who didn't attend. That is why I think it is unethical.

Its not unethical, more so lack of respect. Sad thing is that most employers view worker bees as extendible and have no respect for their time... They probably realized they could not force people to come in on a Saturday and had to make it non-mandatory... but were pissed when nobody showed up...

I have had to work Saturdays many times before (I am an IT guy) and i'll be damned if they don't give me extra PTO, or a day off in exchange. You could always complain to your HR dept, are they making you do safety training after work hours?

Personally I think its a game of manipulation. It's a way for them to get you to jump through hoops the next time. There is probably some sort of regulation that they have to pay you for a mandatory meeting but not for an optional one. Its a way to make what should be a paid mandatory meeting a free meeting that people will be scared to miss. Companies pull this type of crap all the time. sucks but what are ya gonna do?

It's blighted, but I don't like to throw the word "unethical" around, especially on a black-hat forum. She's clearly one of those deluded nuts who is surprised, and then can't stand it, when she finds that the rest of the universe has different priorities than she does.

Anyway it sounds like a place that's only good for quitting from. Preferably all at once so she can try to deliver everything herself and then deal with all the furious customers who didn't get their stuff on time.

Stuff like that is one of the reasons I avoid working for anyone else.

Well, I am in the trucking industry and it's near impossible to get everyone together during regular hours. That is why most meetings are scheduled on saturdays (Which is our day off). The drivers already understand and except this as standard because of our weird work hours.

The extra training was implemented as a result for us not showing up to the meeting, and I also fell it's because they got pissed no one showed up. The dumb fucks should not have made it opitonal IMO. I do not know about you all, but if I have the "option" to be with my family, or attend a safety meeting on my day off, I believe you know the answer to that one. :)

My sentiments exactly.

Sounds like you're getting Blackhatted by your boss.

Ha! I didn't think of it like that. You're right. I did reply to her though in respect to my thoughts about what she is doing. But the message got ignored like I expected. I wish I could just walk out on them, but I do have to support my family and have to have something lined up before I make a drastic move like that.

The Golden Noose Theory. They give ya just enough to keep you hanging around.

Has anyone checked the unemployment numbers?? If this country wasn't so against employers, they make them do stupid training so they can cover themselves when somebody sues, and they will. Or call the labor board. We need and even balance here.

I can relate to you, all this does is drive me and motivate me to read and learn as much as I can from this forum and apply methods and eventually become my own boss
You can do it, just use all this as an incentive!

Yea, I know Adbot.. it's a terrible feeling to have to depend on a job to pay the bills. I do have a ray of hope though. I am working on becoming a master distiller and I want to own my own micro distillery. I just can't make that happen fast enough if you know what I mean.

Just keep at it man. Its awesome to have something your passionate about doing. So many people just give up somewhere along the way. Persistence is key and sometimes slow and steady does win the race.

Typical office politics. Expecting workers to come in on their day off and not compensating them for it is just bullshit. Then Changing a meeting from mandatory to not mandatory and then making those who did not show up feel scrutinized. Even bigger bullshit. All they are doing is alienating their workers.

I am so glad that I wake up everyday and I have the decision to work or scratch my balls all day. I hope you get there bro. I am sure working for a company like this is going to wear on you.
