    Home Page:
After the latest tweet from Matt, Many have feared about the future of EMD. Actually this update have very little effect in search results, we can't judge many metrics.

Still we have analyzed some of the sites which are ranking well and few are slightly dropped.

Dropped sites are having certain things in common.

*Sites have keyword presence highly on the homepage and its url structure.
*Sites interlinking have been done with keywords. ie, one page to another internal page is referenced with keyword.
*Pages title and the url structure have exact matched keywords.
*Very less number of social presence.
*Also content is placed as a single post with keywords less than 500.

    Try to resolve.
*Place content in paragraph basis and add different title to it.
*When interlinking the pages with in the sites, make sure to add more generic keyword rather than a money site keyword.
*Try to place the keyword either once in url or title of the paragraph.
    *Add more social signals.

If you have any other idea, share here.

EMD's are probably just as useful as they were before. Having the EMD practically screams that your site is relevant to what the person is searching.

But google realized although EMD may indicate very high relevance, they don't necessarily indicate high quality. So they looked around and figured out that people were using the high relevance (which you just pay for by buying the domain) to replace building high quality. Buying a good EMD is essentially paying for relevance and thus good ranking.

They can't really make EMD's not count. They really do indicate relevance. The domain name is a very important factor in ranking, and it's too important a factor for them to start ignoring.

So to fix the problem of low-quality EMD's google is now going to set harsher quality standards for EMD's and monitor them closely.

The fact is that nobody was punished because they used an EMD, they were punished because they had low quality content on the EMD. The name is what got google's attention. Your site is what got you penalized.

This can't be right.. Following this advice would mean that:

    A) We need to use non-relevant keywords to interlink on our site, so instead of saying on an assassin's creed review something like "Also, be sure to check out our _assassin's creed 2 review_", we now have to say something generic like "Also, be sure to check out or _other game review_" otherwise we'll be penalized?

    B) We can't optimize the homepage for the keyword? So how do Google know what keyword we're targeting. They may as well rank us for "fluffy white donkeys".

    C) Our title and url should be something random and non-related to the keyword? "Game review of a game I can't mention the title for otherwise get penalized" -- Again you won't rank for anything since Google won't know what your page is about.

The social signals make a bit of sense, but surely they're not going to penalize for LACK of a certain type of backlink. Not everything has social backlinks.

Content less than 500 words is the only one that make sense.

If this is legit then it's like the anti-seo seo update and it's telling us to remove all seo from our emds.

My guess would be that it's much simpler than all of this.

First google checks your current position with the EMD. Then google calculates what your position would be if you did not have an EMD, just a regular domain name. By ignoring the EMD, they are calculating how much of an impact other factors are having (social signals, backlinks, content, quality, uniqueness, keyword density...etc).

If you are #1 with your EMD, but #60 without the EMD, then google knows you are relying much too heavily on the domain name for your ranking. You only had #1 because of the name, when your actual site deserves to be #60.

This algorithm may have been designed to punish people who were relying too heavily on their EMD to rank, and were lacking in terms of quality or other factors.

If your site is #1 with the EMD, but would be #5 without the EMD, then google lets you stay because it's clear your site isn't relying completely on it's domain name to rank.

not much agree to this. I have 2 emds. In one site I am doing all this. main keyword everywhere. It went from from #9 to #7. Almost all the SEO reports suggested me to not to do these things but I was lazy. Suddenly it improved in SERPs.

Second EMD have everything correct and it tanked from #1 to #5.

I agree with OP on this. EMD's in addition to keyword in URL, description, header tags are the ones that got hit badly. Basically it indicates I am try to rank for this keyword and would be reg signal in Google's eyes. I think it also looks at your backlink page and the usage of keywords in there.

on-page SEO has never been against Google's terms..

It seems absolutely ridiculous to me that you would be penalized for having your keyword in the title. Without the keyword in either the domain, path or h1 then how can Google possibly know what your page is about? Also, if you change your title from "Some title with keyword1" to "some title with keyword2" by this logic you'll get penalized for having keyword2 in the title.

This is just utterly ridiculous and makes absolutely no sense. "How to SEO? Remove the keywords you want to rank for"

This EMD update is based purely upon the domain qualifier - they have simply 'turned down' the url qualifier and reduced its weight. Its really as simple as that. It is this reason why non emd domains have also been hit since the qualifier is applied to domain whether full or in part matching the query. We just now need to work harder on our overall SEO strategy having lost this 'extra' benefit IMO :)

Yeah, this makes the most sense. They're not going to suddenly penalize for some arbitrary things like having too many keywords and an emd.

Then how do you explain that people with no EMD are also reporting lower traffic, including myself? The only thing that I did in the beginning when I created my site was over optimizing the on-site SEO cos that's what Google said to do. I over did it though but is still OK from a visitor's point of view (i.e. it doesn't read: When the KEYWORD is made, the KEYWORD is KEYWORD so that the KEYWORD can be KEYWORD).

I have other sites that are not over optimized and actually are semi EMD, and they have higher traffic since 2 days ago (about 50% more).

This latest update means that EMDs will be under greater scrutiny by Matt and his merry band of dickheads. They killed one of my sites but it wasn't critical to my marketing efforts. The site wasn't that bad but new content probably would have helped.

    Google sucks the big one.

This isn't entirely true. I think the whole thing has something to do with the anchor text being the same as the EMD. I have a website that isn't a small EMD site by any means. Its a big forum with 3000 topics, tons of users, etc.

I had built quite a few backlinks to its main domain and suddenly yesterday it disppeared. Same with a couple other sites of mine. My high quality sites fell... my garbage sites are fine...

I think it's more complex than that. Some domains got clearly punished. They were on the first page and then dissapeared from rankings completely. That doesn't happen if you just "turn down" the url qualifier. Punishing domains means they have to have a way to identifiy which of the EMD domains were good and should be left alone, and which require punishment.

If they simply turned it down everything we see would be less drastic and more proportionate.

Its definitely not only the domain value being turned down. On my site the content alone should rank me within 3 pages with the crappiest domain. With domain it should be higher because it does have some value right? - just turned down.

I think it has to do with links + EMD + and possibly some onpage as well.

I still think it is to early to tell exactly all what Google did, but for those that nothing happened to, congrats. I really want to see the results in the upcoming weeks after the update.

    IM all the way.
Interestingly, our website that has been hit quite harshly, but it is still on the first page. It is also not a EMD. The domain is like, 5+ years old. Its had soem crappy SEO done in the past but that finished like 8 months ago. No webmaster email yet. Its changed rankings like this - #2 - 8. This sort of thing. Its not like we've dropped off the face of the earth; its just our traffic is crawling.

/\ This + lack of social signals like OP suggested
