I've currently got a fairly new site in my niche. The niche itself is fairly small at the moment, however the way things are going, it should become bigger and bigger over the next few years, so I figured it was best to give it a shot!

At the moment, the domain we're using is more of a brandable domain, it doesn't directly relate to the niche through keywords. Think of it as a made up name, through an amalgamation of words (Facebook, Yahoo etc)

Am I better off trying to get something more towards an EMD? For example, if I was in the healthy food niche, healthyfoodinformation.com. I've noticed that when searching for keywords, lots of domains have the keywords in them, but I'm unsure if this is due to the content of the site, or if the domain name has a contributing factor.

There seems to be a lot of contradicting information online, so I was wondering what experience you have had.

On the long run brandable domain will rank just as fine as the EMD.
On the short run, you can build links to EMD and 301 it to the brandable domain.

For a new niche that as you said is "small at the moment, however the way things are going, it should become bigger and bigger" - invest in a good EMD. It will gain in value as the niche grows. Brandable won't have that.

Brandable domains seem more legit to your visitors. Don't worry about the rankings. If the competition is low you will outrank them easily just with unique content. Also do not believe that EMD have today the power that had during the recent past. If on the other hand, this is a disposable domain you can use an EMD.

I will never use brandable domain for a really small niche, where the keywords in domain name represents my business (and are easy to find available).
If I need to build authority website the best choise is brandable domain so people can remember it better.

As @lancis said you need to consider long and short run too :)

If the niche is too small, go with EMD. Go with brandable domain only if you want to invest in other forms of marketing activities in future...

I try to stick to 3 words with EMD. 4 words max is my limit. You can still build a good website even without EMD though.

    Why not have both?

Brandable with your primary keyword in the domain name could be a possibility too..

With a lot of the good domains already taken thinking outside of the box can go a long way.

To expand on this let's use a brand like amaz0n for example.

Heavy marketing and promotion was required to make that brand known as a marketplace. The name alone gives you nothing in terms of what the business is.

Now on the other hand, had they have branded themselves as amaz0nbooks.com you would know they were in the book niche.

    Simple and effective.

    :)

In my personal experience, emd's tend to give a little bit more of a boost to your rankings.
