Hi there, I have a new EMD I am working on. I created a wordpress site, added close to 25 pages of really good content related to the niche. In each article I link back to the homepage of the site using my targetted keyword. On the homepage I display all 25 articles. In the site-wide footer I have a link back to the homepage using the keyword as well.

This has worked well for me in the past, but for some reason this time the homepage is not ranking for the keyword. The inner pages are ranking for the keyword since they contain it in the meta titles as well as throughout the articles.

Do you guys think this is an over-optimization penalty?

How do I get around this? Should I build a bunch of links to the homepage using unrelated anchor text?

I really appreciate your help, thank you!

Do you have the same keywords in meta titles of home page also? If not, may be adding them will get your site ranked.

How old is the website? Do you have any Google Analytics info?

Yes, I have keywords in the meta title, title, meta description and meta keywords tag. Now I'm realizing the homepage has no unique content on it. It just displays the 25 inner blog posts in full. Maybe I should add some unique content somewhere?

The site is about 2 months old. The inner pages and ranking well. For example if my main keyword was "Blue Widgets", I have an inner blog post titled "Blue Widget Review" that is ranking just fine for its keywords. I built links to all the inner pages as well. However, this "Blue Widget Review" page is ranking for my main keyword instead of my homepage since I structured the meta title to look like "Blue Widget Review | Blue Widgets".

if the homepage has no unique content that may be the problem - test it out. If not may be G has seen it as over optimized

Have you had many visitors to your site? Just check where viewers are going straight after they enter your site. What is the link most people click on? Is it the inner page that is currently ranking?

They go to the inner page that is ranking. I have a link to the homepage on that post, but obviously not many are clicking through.

That is why this is happening then. As most people are going straight to this inner page and most probably is the exit page then Google try's to help users by listing this URL in the SERP's.

How to avoid it, difficult but possible. Try to influence users to stay on your homepage longer and not go straight to that inner page. Build stronger links to your home page. Eventually they will change it if you follow these steps.

My homepage isn't ranking. The only page listed is the inner page.

What I've done now is re-arranged some content so that there is about 300 words of unique content on the homepage plus the 25 other blog posts in full.

I have this problem in one my site too after 20.04.2012.I think that is the result of Panda update. home page on my site fell from SERP for keywords that was even the top position. only exception is the word that contains the domain where the movement was from 1 to 7 position.
