If I am trying to rank for "shipping company China" and I get EMD "licensedElectricianNYC.com"
would the EMD hurt my chances of ranking, or it would make no difference?

Ranking I have no idea BUT you ain't going to get any customers. Would you order your Chinese shipping from LicensedElectricianNYC.com? Unless you're after a shit site, or your actual keywords work better than this example, I wouldn't bother. Get a 'brand' domain instead.

ok, maybe you guys thought this was a dumb question, but the reason I ask is that I have an aged EMD with high quality backlinks....it's an abandoned project.
Now I am trying to get into another niche, and with google hating to rank new sites, I thought I might use the EMD.

visitors probably won't notice the domain name. They just come to the site from search engines.
