Does having an active discussion forum on your website
do much for boosting overall SEO authority?

    Thanks,

Emm... Its always good to have user's response on the website.. It updates your website and improves the popularity. And search engines love showing a popular website in search results.

Not neccessarily for its seo impact but to have hundreds of new users interacting with your site daily is gold. Particularly if they are using facebook-G+ etc. If you have a decent niche every thread on that forum will be getting indexed.....have enough people asking/answering questions and you have a team of free content writers running your website for you.

It provides new content that will bring in long tail traffic.

People are more likely to link to a forum where they are active than they are to link to a blog that they read.

You can set up the forum so that when a keyword is used it sends a link to a post on your main site that you're trying to rank.
