Hello fellow BHW members and thank you for checking out my shitty ecommerce journey. Below is the normal text about the journey, but I've also decided to create some videos to spice up this thread a little bit.

Disclaimer: sorry for the audio, it was a windy day here in FL

    The plan:

Grow an Instagram account and sell products that I buy from Aliexpress
Send product to myself first, then ship it out to customer with my packaging
Use shopify as the selling platform
Instagram shoutouts to grow the page, and Instagram ads to scale up

    My costs:
    Domain = $4 or something
Products + shipping from China = $3.50-$3.65 each
    Packaging = $0.40 each

Looking to sell each product for $15 or $20 (before discounts)
Margins aren't insane, but it's just an experiment at the end of the day

The first test run is going to be with a stock of 20, and if things looks like they are working out well then I will order more.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by and let's hope that I can get enough extra money for a great time in Vegas!

Interesting journey, will follow and I wish you good luck! :) And a few questions...

    1. Why did you choose Instagram instead of, for example Facebook. Don't you think it is hard to get people to buy stuff while they are surfing with their phone?

    2. How much % do you add upon the price?

    3. Will it not cause import fees and stuff when you first take it to your home to repack it? What's your take on Pro/Cons for dropshipping VS ordering to your home first?

Short update: Packaging arrived, so I'm just waiting on the products from China
I got 25 boxes on Amazon for $8.50, the only problem is that they aren't branded so I might figure out a cheap way to get my logo on them or something

    Thank you, much appreciated

    1. Mainly going with Instagram because I personally hate dealing with Facebook. I do worry about people not converting while being on mobile, but at the end of the day I'm not necessarily looking for massive sales so hopefully Instagram will be a good starting point. Maybe if it becomes successful then I can JV with someone to start working on Facebook.

    2. Well the goods cost me about $3.60 and I aim to sell it for about $15

    3. I'm not sure about import fees since I've only placed small orders and don't think I had to pay any extra fees. I thought about just dropshipping the items at first, but if I were a customer I wouldn't be pleased if I had to wait 12-20 days for something. It's obviously more work on my end, but perhaps if everything goes well then I'll have a bit of a brand on my hands and could expand to selling other products.

oh great idea, and wayyyy cheaper than my custom stickers idea. Luckily it should still be a while until the stuff arrives from China so I have a minute to get the stamper. I see one that I want from Staples for like $18.99!

I had a friend that opened a discount retail store that specialized in a particular niche and he bought a bunch of boxes, got a huge stamp and stamped them all.

He then put the boxes on shelves behind his counter EMPTY as he did not have a lot of inventory but it looked like he did.

Looked very good and worked very well.

Sounds like a great plan honestly, I can't imagine having a physical location to sell stuff!

Does your friend include anything extra in the box, like marketing material? I'm currently brainstorming ideas for things I could include in the box to help promote a little bit more

Yeah, he has an el cheapo flyer in there with a coupon for another purchase... the store was built to be a discount house for his niche products and everything he did gave it that look and feel. He put up like 10K of his own money and borrowed another 10 from me so he was really working on a shoe string... he is now in his 14th year in business so it works.

There's a ton that you can do with packaging.

I got this speaker/ charger or something of the sort a few months ago from Amazon, and the packaging was amazing from an IM viewpoint.

It was very similar to the boxes that you have, except each side, or "wall" of the box unwrapped with a different instruction on each side, which eventually led to a coupon code presented nicely for their Amazon store. So it was like a really neat infographic that was folded up into a box.

I also really dig little business cards that are hand-signed in the box, I think they look really neat and give that extra personal touch.

It's all about creating a quality customer experience, even if you may not see the return right away.

That's awesome, I'll probably print out a batch of flyers, but right now I'm aiming to sell just 1 product so I'm not sure what to put on the printout.
Just curious, how many items does your friend sell now? How many did he/she start off with?

little business cards might be the way to go for me. I obviously like the idea of the cool boxes, but figure it will cut into my profits pretty hard

Thank you, hopefully I can have some fun with this like you did with your journey!

He started off with about 12K - 13K in inventory and probably had 15 items.

Now he has a full blown retail store with hundreds of related products.

Not bad at all. I'm super interested in getting started with an offline, local business.
My first attempt will probably be working with a buddy to get a pontoon boat and sell bait fish at the local boat ramps. Head to the skyway in the morning and net bait on his boat, head back to the river and sell it for $20 a scoop :)

A very old friend of mine has a son that does that in the Keys.

You'll be working if you decide to do that but the off set is that you day begins deciding which bathing suit and pair of sunglasses to wear that day.
