eBook vs Membership Site

I have found a really awesome niche and I want to get a product started.

So I have a choice to outsource a eBook (mostly rewritten) or a membership site. I can probably rewrite the eBook myself but I'll need to outsource the membership site. My budget is only around $50-$100.

The eBook will be easy to make as I'll just rip all the info. The membership site, I'm not so sure...

Will the membership site need more info than the eBook?
Won't most people just quit the subscription after the first few months?
Is my budget big enough for a full site?

So which one should I use?

Personally I would write an ebook and market it for awhile and build a list. Then, once you get some cash coming in from that invest it into a membership site. Give the purchasers of the ebook a free month to get members going but make sure they sign up as a subscription - just free for the first month. Then rock out the membership site, while doing this write another ebook and sell it to your members.

I've had good success selling an ebook up front then upselling the membership aspect at point of purchase. I got a pretty high percentage to take the upsell.

As for pricing it entirely depends on the market. I tend to charge more for information that can make people money. In certain markets it can be hard to pass a certain price point and retain conversions.

I was in the how to cure eczema market a while back and couldn't seem to get sales past the $27 price point. People just weren't willing to pay it because they're were tons of other solutions available around that cost or less.

On the other hand I have some investment courses that I routinely sell for $497 with good success.

So pricing depends on niche and how good your marketing is.

Another idea is to promote both the ebook and membership site at the same time and cross sell them. When a person buys the ebook they get upsold the membership. When they buy the membership they get upsold the ebook.

Of course you'd need to make the products a little different from each other so they're not totally redundant.

I've had this work well too.

2. Make a one page website describing how great your ebook is and have a purchase button with your favorite payment company.

What I meant was that would a membership site need more info for the product than if I just created eBook to sell.



Also, I have totally forgot about this thread. My final decision is start with a eBook. Then I will grow the info on the product until I have enough info to put into a membership site.

You can have both...

You can just create your membership website to deliver your ebook, and then offer your members option to subscribe to whatever you are offering on a monthly basis... even if it's a $9 membership or 20, at least it will give you some continuos income.

Also it is easier to follow up with members that people who are just on your list

hi:

I am starting with one of the standard 'models'...

- offer of free content to build list
- give more free info and promote ebook
- upsell, cross sell to the list

rinse n repeat

in my limited understanding, a list can function like a continuity program. like a club. membership is paid / averaged over time with purchases of other products or affiliate offers.

a membership site requires drip feeding info on a regular basis so as to retain member commitment. this requires a lot of preparation and work.

a list, on the other hand, can still produce results. but the info can be delivered on an adhoc or irregular basis, depending on your productivity for new products. if no new products are available, simply promote an aff offer.

people are less likely to unsubscribe to list. but will be quick to unsubscribe to a continuity program if the material dripped loses its value.

so, i vote for list building compared to a continuity program. same same but different. hehehe

You can maintain a list at the same time as a member area section. If you are going to deliver the product by email to people, then uploading the link on the member area and still sending them a notification to login and check is not much harder

You'd have a chance to offer people more things in the member area, you already have the databse of your products arranged proberly, so this is a big advantage..

Whether you run a member area website, you still need a list
