hey quick question here for you guys:

Im thinking of gathering an email list by sending people who submit their email address on my site a .pdf book (scanned version of a copyrighted book being sold on amazon, and others.. its kind of a popular book). Can I get in trouble doing this ? I know this sounds dumb at first but ive got a couple reasons to think it could be safe :

    1) The .pdf book is available on direct download on the first google results that you get by typing the name of the book + pdf as keyword. (Normally you can only download .pdf books via torrents, because im guessing most direct download sites get taken down) In this case there are at least 3 sites offering direct download (and big ones).
    2) The author of the book is dead (been a while)

What do you think? anyway I can get in trouble?

    thanks

I believe author has to be dead for 90 years for the copyright to fall off. so yes, if book is still under copyright, sharing it would be illegal. can you get in trouble? sure.

by the way, your point #1 is irrelevant.

need a more precise answer.. this is like asking if you can get into trouble for downloading mp3s.. technically the answer would be yes you can get into trouble, but in reality the answer is no, not really. So im kinda looking for the street answer here.. whats really gonna happen? who would have any interest coming after me and why?
