So I'm toying with the idea of selling Cars on EBay Motors

I have a friend who is an auto broker and from time-to-time he has good deals on
rare/collector cars.... 1/2 owners great condition with clean vin and proper docs

I spoke with him today about a few cars he's looking to sell and after searching eBay,I discovered that there was in fact a market for a few deals he's currently working on.

I'm not too familiar with eBay, but assuming the owner was willing to allow the vehicle to be sold, how difficult would to orchestrate these type transactions?

    Specifically
Would I need to be registered as an Automotive Dealer?

Should I consider partnering with a dealer on eBay and have it listed or would a partnership with a Power Seller who has sold a range of items (no necessarily cars) be sufficient?

Once auction is completed, how long would it take for the vehicle owner to have funds in hand/escrowed in order to feel comfortable releasing vehicle to purchaser?

What protection would we have from a buyer who decides upon arrival that they simply do not want vehicle without a valid reason?

Any feedback or help brainstorming this opportunity would be appreciated

    Thanks

No you do not need to be a dealer to sell cars on eBay

Should I consider partnering with a dealer on eBay and have it listed or would a partnership with a Power Seller who has sold a range of items (no necessarily cars) be sufficient?

You can since they already have the trust built up as I noticed accounts with 0 feedback have a hard time selling rare cars on ebay

Once auction is completed, how long would it take for the vehicle owner to have funds in hand/escrowed in order to feel comfortable releasing vehicle to purchaser?

Usually 48 hours but this is a deposit and the majority of the time being non refundable...The deposit is usually 25% of the final bid but can be higher

What protection would we have from a buyer who decides upon arrival that they simply do not want vehicle without a valid reason?

(If I remember correctly) If you didnt lie in your auction about the car the buyer is in a legally binding contract to purchase the car unless otherwise...Don't forget the buyer already paid a deposit too.

I once bought a car on ebay and then 4 years later sold the exact same car on ebay.

I highly recommend it if you are indeed selling rarer cars. People who are looking for rarer cars will have no problem either flying across the county or paying a company to transport it.

When I bought my car it came from Maine and I live in Texas. I paid around 1200 to have it shipped.

When I sold it the guy flew into Texas from somewhere Midwest and brought an envelope full of cash.

I don't think you need to partner with anyone(why would they want to partner>?). If you don't have very many feedback I highly recommend building some up. Invest just a little money and get some good solid feedback. Hell even sell some random stuff so you have seller feedback as well. <---Recommend this more than buyer feedback.

Yeah anyone buying a car from you is/should want the car. So expect a deposit pretty quick. After that it could take up to a couple weeks or whatever you designate for them to fund the balance. Don't ship until you have the funds in your hand.

As far as protection you should be pretty well protected considering you will have your cash before they get the car.

The final balance is negotiable but most sellers require the final balance within 10 days unless other arrangements have been made

the car in my avatar was bought and sold on ebay. i actually flew to pick it up. i paid a $500 deposit on paypal and brought the rest of the cash with me. i didn't not hand over the funds until i saw that it had a good, clean title. if you are dealing with high dollar cars you will most likely get cashiers or loan checks which you can verify. i sold this car on ebay too. a guy drove from 2 states away with his trailer and gave me the cash for it.

even somewhat ordinary cars can do good money on ebay. so you don't have to limit yourself to rare pieces. i've bought and sold many on there.
