This is not something I have done myself (Yet), but when searching for expired domains, I found several domains which used to be forums.

A lot of people worry about their PBN sites not looking natural, and fear getting pimp slapped by the big G. My thought was, why not build a forum?

You could post a thread with a contextual link in it, then make it a sticky post.

Instead of paying $5 - $10 per article for your PBN, just hire some forum posters to make your forum look popular.

Bang! Quality link which nobody will think twice about!

Does anyone do this? I haven't seen much speak about it

I haven't tried this but I'm not sure you would be saving money. In order to get quality posts you would still have to pay the posters roughly what you would be paying for articles, no? Sure, the forum posts would be shorter but you would need quite a few. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, actually it would probably be a good thing to diversify the type of links you are setting up but I think the cost would be the same.

Although forum posts have lost a lot of value over the last few months/years I don't wholly agree with this. Some niches thrive on a good mixture of all types of links. I think it would look a bit suspect if at least a small amount of your backlink distribution wasn't from forums.
