(mods: not sure if this goes in offline marketing or writing articles, since it is about writing...) Nearly every community newspaper, whether daily or weekly, needs freelancers to cover local events -- high school sports, government meetings, etc. They never have enough full-time reporters to do everything, and the top assignments are usually covered by the fulltimers. Look in the newspaper's ads or flat out ask if they need any stringers, and usually they will try you out on a trial basis and let you do yo thing. They often pay weekly or monthly but the minimum pay is usually at least $20/article (and this was years ago, so it could well be better now). I used to make an extra $300-400/month as a stringer while still working at the paper as an editor, and it was pretty sweet. The only downside is the city meetings can sometimes be long and boring.
