I have a site that was stuck at #5 on Google no matter how many links I sent to it, but I made it jump to #2 overnight. Here's what I did:

1- I sent links with diversified anchors while maintaining high quality.
2- I deleted all unused themes, plugins, and anything just sitting there from my Wordpress installation.

The result? Nice SERP rise. Give it a try and post your results here!

The theory is solid here. A faster site will give you more "SEO juice". Good links, even social signals have proved to help me rank quickly in the past.

This is an useful tip for sure, and everyone should uninstall plugins that they don't use.

That being said I can't see how unused themes can hinder performance...

Well, deleting unused themes decreases the size of your site thus decreasing it's load time, which is a ranking factor.

If you have a big authority site or major money site, part of your on-page SEO should be page speed optimization and mobile responsiveness. Google recently added a mobile usability index to WMT, so it's clearly something that they are valuing more.

It's easy to get a 90+ speed rating if you follow the optimisation tips in Google's page speed tool. I've gotten a 90+ rating more times than I count. Most of the time I reached 90+ by simply installing a caching plugin on my smaller sites.

Also, learn to use Total Cache, it can greatly decrease your loading time, which is known to be a ranking factor.

This isn't true, but your idea is a good idea.

Wordpress doesn't load the unused themes, they just sit in a folder. You can look at the site code and you won't see anything loading unused themes. With that said, I also delete any of the stuff that isn't used including themes and plugins.

1- Even if this is usual stuff to you, some people on this forum might not know this yet. This piece of information can be very useful to them.

2- Not only have I tested this myself (on more than 1 site,) but I've also seen a thread, specifically about this topic, here on BHW, and it is indeed working. Thread link: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...-should-delete-all-unused-themes-plugins.html
