How difficult would it be to rank number one on google for a keyword string that has a competition level of around 5000 pages in the results?

5000 results by just searching your Keyword string in google ?

Better Search this> intitle:"your keyword string here" and see how many results comes up.

Keyword Competitiveness can be known by Analyzing 1st 10-15 Results in google. Check thier authority, Content, PR, Backlinks Etc.

Check their authority, Content, PR, Backlinks and try to get a link from similar pages on other sites.

    yes, without quotes.

can you rank with just onsite seo, or would you need backlinks also?

My website ranks in the 6th position and 8th position (according to Google Webmaster Tools) for keywords with 15.3 million results and 17.5 million results respectively and let me tel lyou something, my website hardly has an backlinks, but I would say that it has excellent on-page SEO (good link structuring, every article has a keyword density of 1-3%, decent page speed times, etcetera). Backlinks are important, but you can still rank a website without them (preferably with them, so get as many relevant and high PR backlinks as you can).

Onpage with 2 - 3 guest post can rank your site. Also ranking this competition will fetch you any benefit? I mean keyword with this much competition will have decent monthly search?

Do ON page first and make it strong in this side.. Then check back your rankings once and build backlinks accordingly.. To rank in top
you need to do some off page strategies..

Ranking depends upon many factors. Its doesn't depends on one factor. Yes, you need to check your On page and Off page SEO.
If you want rank high in Google for high competitive keywords. Then you need to be prepare for travel long term and lots of hard work to do with more patience.

Google dislike the PBN (Private blog network ). Google penalized many sites which have PBN. (Recent update)

create a blog at blogger, wordpress.... and write some unique articles related to your niche, then link to your self, some with targeted anchor text, some with naked URL.

If you don't have a domain yet then try to insert the KW (or at least a part of it) into the domain. If you already have a domain, then make an subpage with url like www.domain.com/keyword.

Put the keyword in H1 title and slightly differ the KW in H2/H3. Dont forget to put it in the metas and try to use as many variations of the KWs in the actual content (and the content on the page shouldn't be south of 500 words). Don't forget about an image/video that has the right attributes (e.g. title, alt text etc.).

If it's low-comp then it should rank on itself, if not, give it a push with comments, bookmarks and some web2.0 stuff.
