Easier to rank site subpages or seperate websites?

For a business with multiple locations in different cities is it better to setup subpages on the business headquarters website or separate websites for each city business location?

Which option do you think would be best for ranking businesses in different cities?

The last large entity that I did business with had separate sites for each business... there were over 40 of them.

You can operate either way but I would not do subpages, I would do inner pages if you do the large site.

Some of that decision process may want to include the actual business structure as well.

Sub pages. Today google wants branding and trust. Build the rep for one page and build up the separate pages, and it will trickle to other pages on your site as well.

Regarding google, is it easier to rank via either option?

Jon is correct as to ranking, no doubt.

My large client was already positioned with those sites so that is what I had to work with and the way his biz was structured it made sense to have different sites.

If it's not a large business with a big marketing budget, you are better off with inner pages rather than separate sites because it takes way more effort, time, and money to rank separate sites.

If you have a good concept of internal link structure and a good brand, then you can rank faster with subpages and its penguin safe if you do it right..
