e-Commerce Story: Pick a product, and sell it!

    I've been back and forth on BHW learning of new ways to make money, ways that I've tried and failed... MANY TIMES! It got to the point where I didn't have much faith on my projects anymore because I didn't know whether they would work out or not. I stopped doing online work for about 3 months and focused on offline.

    It's funny how that are exclusive to the making money online world could STILL have an impact on your daily life and work. After a while, I landed a job selling products that I've never heard of before. Immediately I searched for them online, there's a fact I learned a while back: "A person can learn from Google in 4 months what it would take him 4 years of school to learn". Same with marketing, while others are going to seminars IRL trying to learn how to put products (cars, houses, etc.) in front of people, we learn how to do that here on BHW and reading online and the fruits of knowledge flow to you sub-conciously.

    So after learning about these products, I immediated typed "buy (product) online" and the results came in: Only 2-3 sites that actually sell this and the main ones's onsite SEO looked terrible.

    I went to my Dynadot account and picked a name. Looking for a long-term income from this, and not just to rank CPA ads, I made up a brandable name that had nothing to do with the products, then installed my favorite shopping cart software in www.brand.com/buy-(products)-online to atleast have that exact keyword in my URL.


    The products - Working at a place that had a wholesale master list for these products, I knew exactly where to buy them from. These products aren't general and are specific items that people look for. Keep this in mind... NO Product is too specific for you to sell. At first I was skeptical and thought that I wouldn't make much sales... Why would people buy from me when they can just Amazon it. Never think that way. The best investment to make in these type of sites is

    1. A Blog post on a relevant site
    2. A Banner on a relevant site

    Speeding things up here, after the first week of just building the site and my catalog... I needed to get traffic. I tried Google adwords and lost alot of money... It quickly discouraged me and I left the site for about 2 weeks. Then I remember reading here once that media buys can be very lucrative in the right niche. I bought blog posts on 2-3 different sites for about $30 a piece, and a banner on a high traffic forum for $150 a month.

    I was shocked at the effectiveness of these buys.

    When things were looking down... I gave it what I thought was gonna be my last effort towards that site before I shut it down because of losing that money. Now I'm buying media and blog posts everywhere!

    This is just a short summary as time is very limited for me right now and I'll come back and add a few details later on and answer any questions anyone might have here.

    Fantastic! I strongly suggest you use Analytics and understand your customers well. Keep optimizing your website for conversions. You already have the traffic now it's just about convincing the already coming traffic to buy it from you.

    I work for a guy who sells a product, actually several products and he makes bank from it. The markups when you buy legit wholesale are ridiculous.

    I dont know what he makes now, but last October we did $159,000 in sales and the owner said he put $80,000 in the bank (profit) this October he did $350,000 in sales so I imagine his profit is much higher this month. Going to do 5 Million+ this year in sales.

    You are right, if you can find a product you can buy wholesale and can market it, you can make plenty of money off of it.

    Great story, maybe you can share how to drill down and find a product/niche to work in for those looking to do the same as you.

    The software I've felt comfortable with is Opencart, it's free and it's much easier to set up than Magento. The options in Magento are nice but I wanted something that was easy to just upload and sell.

    Thanks much! And yes that is definitely a good idea. I uploaded analytics code the first week I built the site and now I check daily for keywords that drives people to the site. Sometimes when I'm not busy I add a page to the site and write an article focused around that keyword. When I'm out of time I copy and paste a list of keywords and send it to an article writer to make me a bunch of articles.


    I'm gonna add another thread later on to detail the best products to look for. The products I sell are specific products, which can still make a good deal of money if grouped together with other products that people might seem to have a hard time finding.

    What I mean by specific would be for example: Instead of someone searching for "beauty cream" in general, I would add a catalog in a shop if I sold beauty cream and would make it "Beauty Cream for Dark Spots", the customers looking for this would feel comfortable buying this product from you because you've focused on that specific keyword and you have a whole catalog of 10-15 different products just focused on that specific product niche. Yes the searches might not be in the 1000's, but do this with a group of different specific searches that are all in the same niche area and you'd be golden.


    It's a great way to build clients fast! Right now I have 6 blog posts on sites that get 10-100 daily visitors a day each, and 1 banner ad on the top of forums that send me about 150 visits a day alone. This might not seem like much to a marketer who's used to the 1000's of visitors need for good money on a CPA site, but in the e-commerce business, 1 customer might spend a good 200 - 300$. With the right products, this can be great money.

    I've spent about $200 in the last week of October for media buys, and since then I've a little over $7,500 and it's just started getting into the daily $1,000+ just these past few days. It's a really high ROI and is great when your overhead on products is really low (the best products to look for )


    Yes, these are all phsyical products that I pack and ship myself. The very first thing I look in a product is it's cost, and retail value. The products I'm selling now most cost a little under $2 and I turn around and sell for $13.99 being my cheapest and $27.49 being my highest. My competition is used to selling these products at really high return prices and sell's it's cheapest products for a little over $20.00. One of my first goals when finding out these products had low cost was to kill off my competition by setting my prices low for the first few months or whatever time it took me to build a solid client base. I had thought about setting them even lower, but I didn't want to seem like a "too-good-to-be-true" site. Since my product overhead is really low I added free shipping to every order on my site and also set the minimum order requirement to 5 pcs so I wouldn't 1 pc orders that shipping would cut profits by half from.

    Yes, what I did was search for "(niche of products) reviews" and similar terms. I built a list of emails of site owners I could find or used the "Contact Us" page on the sites of mainly the first two pages of the Google search.

Just have few questions though related to media buyings;what parameter do you look for when buying ad space/banner from a site,how do you find them(in general perspective)?I am also trying to do some media buy for one of my site but just afraid I will bleed out soon so need some advice.

    Why do you choose blogpost on relevant site/blog? It will give you some temporary exposure and than dry out after the blog post goes from the front page. Seems like sitewide banner is the way to go - sure it's more expensive, but should be more effecient.
    Also not sure what niche are you in and the good way to get free blog post is give away.
