Question about duplicate content and user profiles...

Say for example a user 'likes' something on a site (not necessarily facebook but there are a lot of social media sites out there, tumblr, etc).

So you have the 'original' post and then what if 500 people 'like' that post and it now shows on that users profile page or blog.

Does that mean there are 500 copies of that post on the site now? How do sites such as that not have duplicate content penalties for this, or rather how would they handle such a situation so as not to have a penalty?

When many users share same website or blog post in many social bookmarking sites or social networking sites such as Facebook, in this situation the source of that content to be same. It is just like referring original source of content for a blog post. Therefore this content is not consider duplicate content by search engine.

I believe in social media profiles there is no issue of duplicate content... because social media profiles are password protected and Google does not crawl password protected files.

Thanks for asking that question. I never thought about it, but if the bookmarks actually created duplicate content, then the SEO enhancements of said bookmarks would be canceled out. I'm glad that's not the case.
