    i have site.com/shapes/circles/blue, site.com/shapes/circles and site.com/shapes and site.com, i have a lot of different products as well (i.e. site.com/shapes/squares/orange, etc)

    the problem is at the bottom of the chain, each one will appear in every url which i think = duplicate content (so blue circles appear in /shapes/circles/blue, /shapes/circles, /shapes and / )

    i dont want to remove the higher level urls ( like /shapes/circles or /shapes ), because i have seo for 'shapes' (very general word) and 'circles'

    i think i am getting hit hard here for duplicate content, what should i do ?

    If the content on the pages is the same, then you're most likely getting hit by a duplicate content penalty. If it's just your URLs that are similar, then I don't think it's duplicate content.

    Regardless, use one of the following tools to verify:

    Use this site -> http://www.siteliner.com/
    Or this site -> http://www.copyscape.com/compare.php

    The above tools will tell you how much of the content on your site is duplicate. Any pages that have a high duplicate content value are most likely getting hit by duplicate content penalties.

    Siteliner is better, but only allows you to run a website once per month, so if you make changes and still want to know if they are duplicate then use the copyscape tool to compare the pages against each other.

    The duplication of terms in the URL's is not causing a duplicate content penalty.

    Duplicate content will only kick in if one page's content is almost identical to another pages content.

    If you have two urls pointing to the same page, it will cause duplicate content though.

    In other words, you have a product "blue circles". You build a page for it and put it into two categories, Blue, and Circles. In WP, this will create two url's that point to the same page, and it will be considered duplicate content. (www.xxx.com/blue/bluecircleproduct, and www.xxx.com/circles/bluecircleproduct).

    Isn't that what the "canonical" meta tag used for?
