If a site has alot of duplicate content, will it rank better (after google re-crawls it) if we remove all the duplicate and replace with unique and value added content? Or would we be in some sort of penalty?

    Any experience/advice will be appreciated!

    Thank you

I think the whole "duplicate content" thing is blown out of proportion. I would not worry about it. I would worry more about providing unique quality content.

I think it take some time until Google DE-index your website's duplicate content. But its really nice idea let us know if you done this experiment.

For short-term rankings, duplicate content works until Google does a refresh.

Even if your website isn't penalized now with the duplicate content, by not changing it to original content you are risking having your website deindexed. If putting up original content is an option for you, that's what I would do.

Original content all the way. You can get nicely written articles for $5 each on Freelancer.. well worth it

Even when building contextual backlinks directly to your money site, if the are too spun and low quality Google will eventually catch up with you. Especially with their new algos soon to come..

Hi, the original content is the right way. But yes, G will deindex your bad content long time.
    How to increase the process?
    - Remove all your copy content.
    - Post 1 long post in your index. (600 - 1k words, keywords - 2% etc.)
    - Remove your old site map. And build new.
    - Add your new sitemap in G webmaster tools.
    - Ping your site regulary.
    - Continue to add unique content regulary - if you plan to have 20 posts in your site,
add 1 article every few days. Don't add all 20 post in one day.
    - After each post is added ping again.

This method works for me. I had few sites with PLR scraped content and after G update my sites was down in SERP.
You will see the result after ~1 week. :)

    Hope this helps.

This quoted text below is what I liked the most. If you're using WordPress, upload all 20 posts at once but schedule the other 19 on future dates. Also, always do it the right way as far as content is concerned. Have a strong bias for original and unique content.

Please take note that there's a difference about "original" and "unique" content.
Some good writers just re-write an existing content (e.g. turning passive sentences into active ones) and that will pass Copyscape so they can deliver "original" content.
But great writers don't re-write existing content. They just use those as references so they can deliver not just "original" but also "unique" content as if it's something that readers have not read before. This is the kind of writer everyone wants.
