As I said in my first post, I have been driven here by this post, and I thought that having someone asking me about my project and seeing what I'm doing would be a great incentive to work harder and keep my efforts organized.

    Here's the situation

I created a very simple website a while ago. Actually, on the 5th of June of 2012.
I wrote some 20 articles, installed Analytics and got tired of it. At that time I knew nothing about SEO, nothing about affiliations, nothing about copy.

But then something happened: the site, even if hosted on a crappy free hosting, on a third level domain, was receiving some visits.

So in April 2016 I decided to start again: I wanted to make money out of that site. I changed the theme, started writing fresh articles, put a few affiliation links here and there, changed domain and hosting (not free, bust still shared and cheap, because I'm poor).

    Here's the situation, again
    Schermata 2016-08-10 alle 19.13.25.png
These are my Analytics weekly stats. It's pretty bad, isn't it?

    Schermata 2016-08-10 alle 19.17.43.png
These are my best keywords according to SEMRUSH's free tool.

    Schermata 2016-08-10 alle 19.36.48.png
And this is an Excel table where I inserted data about my affiliation results. It's pretty bad, isn't it?

The site is a blog, and it includes around 60 articles, 2/3 of which are quite long (1000 words each).

    What I want to do
My goal is to be able to earn 20$ a day with this site, and I want to do it using white hat techniques.
I need to learn a lot about keyword research, backlinking strategies, SEO in general.

    My first steps (suggestions welcome!)
-keep the same pace of articles publishing: I am now publishing 2 articles a week
-start a good linking strategy, and I need to study it
-improve my keyword research: I suspect I've been focusing on low profit keywords, so far

    [Day 2]
Second day of my journey on BHW, and I'm here for a couple updates and to ask encouragement and suggestions! :)

    What I did:
-organized my work in a better way: created shortcuts and folders for this project, and so on
-cleaned my list of keywords: reading here I noticed that my kw are not really focused on selling, so I'm trying to find new high traffic keywords*, to stop monitoring the ones which don't bring traffic, to relate keywords with pages
-searched for new ways to earn money: I looked for new affiliation networks other than Amazon; found one in topic with the website; sent a request to join: accepted
-searched for backlink sources: this is something I had overlooked so far. I have only posted a few random links in comments on various english language blogs or forums (but my website is in italian!) but never thought of a strategy. Now I have a list of websites in italian and I am building a list of sites for which I could write guest posts. Hope everything works fine

I'm still building content, but as I have difficulties finding good keywords I am quite unsure what to write about.

*finding good keywords seems to be really difficult: I can't find high traffic kws, and I'm thinking that maybe my niche is not really good... I tried to follow the rules from the guy of Backlinko (not sure I can post a link here) but I'm not really happy with the results.
    Any suggestions on this?

Thank you @dlyhai @tokokipiani and @Gosocials for showing support!

    [Day 11]

Sorry for the random updates, but I've been quite busy with this site and a couple more... Working hard this summer!

    Some results:
Seems that my efforts in changing the structure and position of links to Amazon has been somehow fruitful: August is the first month when I'm having more than a sale per day, on average. I know it's not much, but it's a lot to me!

In terms of visits, here's a graph that shows sessions in August (blu) and June (orange):

    Schermata 2016-08-19 alle 20.19.21.png

August is not the best month, at least in Italy, and I'm quite happy with the results so far: I've increased my traffic by around 80%. It seems that I'm working well.

What I am busy doing right now:

-I finally found some ways to find good keywords: basically reading reading reading a lot everywhere, and then feeding all the kws I come up with to the tools in AdWords. I think I have something good here.
-desperately seeking ways to earn backlinks without paying: I want to write guest posts, but it seems hard to find someone who wants my content
-writing really good content: I've been writing long articles, and I'm quite proud of myself
-pushing my content and brand on social networks. The results are coming slowly. I probably need to automate something now

    What I'm thinking of

This PBNs thing is contagious. I've read a lot about it here on BHW and I'm not sure f I should try it or not. Suggestions?

    [Day 14]

Two weeks since I started his journey, and I feel like I'm learning something new every day.

I am increasing slightly the number of visits, and now I'm focusing more on creating links and presence on social media than writing new content: with 70 pages of written content I guess it's time to make some traffic!

I'm not really happy with the way the links to Amazon are converting, even if I can see some improvements: today I reached the number of sales I had made in the whole July, my most fruitful month so far. The conversion rate for August is of 4.1%.

I just segmented the links creating a lot of new tracking IDs (one per page with affiliation content) and I'll segment more if needed. I want to understand if I can increase the conversion rate, and how.

I started working with Semrush: this is a great tool! Expensive but great. I used the 7 days free trial, and I probably can't afford to make a monthly payment, but it was really useful to understand what my competitors are targeting, and now I have quite a few interesting keywords to use.

That's all for now. I feel still pumped and optimistic. Gonna make it!

This is the way the organic traffic of this site is growing: not really fast, but it's growing.

I have been working on this specific site trying to increase the amount of text per single page. I haven't been creating many new articles lately, but increased the amount of information in the posts which are ranking on the 2nd or 3rd page: let's see if this helps rankings.

About rankings: I have lost some positions for a quite important keyword, but this hasn't affected my sales.

In the last week I've also been working on a new site, which is half part of a PBN and half a proper authority site: it's composed of around 30 pages (of which I have written and published 7 with 4300 words, at the moment).

I really want to create a big network of sites, and I estimated it will take me around 3 months: I worked around 10 hours to create this last site, so far.

Hey man, read your journey. Keep up the good work. If you want SEMrush but don't want to pay the fees, I frequently use fiverr.com no issue. You can also go in on a group buy on sites like http://www.groupbuyseo.net/.

Building a profitable site is a slow process. I'm currently embarking on one my self.

Thank you! Didn't know about this possibility, I'll give it a try.

    [In the meantime]

Some luck for me today! A couple of weeks ago I created a completely random article about a thing that I like and is related to the topic of the site. The article was just a filler, but it was focused on a high traffic and very difficult keyword (unfortunately it doesn't meet commercial intents...).

Yesterday in the afternoon the page ranked quite well for the keyword, I am now in 5th position with it, and is sending quite a lot of traffic to me. Now I have to find a way to exploit all this traffic and send the visitors to a page where they can buy something, but I am also scared: I don't want to change something and lose rank. :D

I started this journey a couple of months ago, and I feel it's time to do a first analysis of the results.
    Let's start with some numbers:
    Schermata 2016-10-10 alle 13.42.38.png

In September I had my best results in terms of visits, earnings (more than doubled them!) and I reached a very small goal: 3$/day. I'm still far from my real goal.
October started well, with a couple of "big" orders (around 20$ of commissions each) but is not going really well in the last few days.

Here's a graph of the traffic:
    Schermata 2016-10-10 alle 13.49.56.png

In the last couple of weeks I found some good topics, some interesting news from the field of the blog, and I was lucky (and good) enough to be in the first positions of rankings.

My visits increase but they are probably less targeted. On the other hand I started receiving a few comments to the site, a few emails, some compliments. That's a sign that people start seeing the website as an authority in its field.

I have created some more articles (I am at 82 now) but I feel I need to do something more: my 20$/day seems really far from being reached.

Creating an authority site is not as easy as it seems, and you need to take care of a lot of things: social networks, mails, great content, style of the site...

I want to start now to optimize the theme, group the articles in specific categories (I already have categories, but now I want to create funnels, like tutorials based on more than one article) and then... we'll see.

    LET'S GO!

Your traffic seems to be doing great so far so like you said, you just gotta convert it better.

I'm curious, what's your SEO strategy like when you're not doing PBNs?

    Anyway, best of luck!

    Hi Hinkys!
    I do everything manually:
-I read around a lot, mainly blogs or websites that talk about the same topic, and mainly in english, so I don't have to fight for the same users.
-Then I try to create lists of keywords that those websites are targeting and come up with a list of keyword in my reference language (italian). What I do next is trying to find the easiest and possibly profitable ones, using keyword tools from AdWords and Semrush.
-And then I write very long and informative articles about those topics, trying to put anything I know about them in a post (or writing more than one post)
-I also try to link articles with each other, and that probably helps, too...

Really easy, I don't do nothing special but maybe I should try something more invasive.

October is come to an end, and here I am for an update. Things are going quite good (except for visits increase... more later) , here are a few numbers:

    Schermata 2016-11-02 alle 16.55.58.png

I started working with facebook Ads, but I didn't achieve many results from them. Anyway I had a 50% increase in the amount of money earned in October, and I am slowly approaching the goal of 20$/day with this website.

The visits are still increasing, but I need to do something more. I started creating more fake accounts and posting on facebook and other socials. I am working less on articles (I've been busy with other sites, and I want to slow down because I want to see if this site can become some sort of passive income) and posting around two per week.

    Schermata 2016-11-02 alle 16.59.57.png

My rankings are going really well (see a screenshot from semrush) and I have been linked here and there lately. Still want to figure out how to create a PBN, and I'm actively working on it.

    Schermata 2016-11-02 alle 17.05.01.png

Well... I'm quite satisfied: I didn't think I could reach this kind of results, and I'm eager to see if I can reach my last goal of 20$ per day.

Well... Your wish brought me good luck: 8 sales yesterday! :D
This month is starting really well, and I still have some expensive items that have to be shipped from last month. Let's hope I can increase the traffic smoothly and without too much effort ;)

Here's an update after more than a month. December is going quite well. People buy a lot of stuff for Christmas.

    Some data:
    Schermata 2016-12-14 alle 13.39.42.png

It seems that FOR THIS MONTH I'm reaching my goal of earning an average of 20$ (19,84€) each day!!!
But I am not sure the month is going to end with this kind of results...
Anyway I'm quite happy of what I'm doing so far, even if I can see something strange in the data: for example in november I had far more clicks than the ones I'm having in December.

I'm also seeing a slight decrease in visits in December after a great November, but that's ok: I'm working less on the social side of this website now.

    Schermata 2016-12-14 alle 13.46.03.png

In the meantime I started a newsletter. I only collected 43 mails so far (in a couple of weeks), but I hope things will get better soon. I am sending a mail to them every two weeks.

I am pretty satisfied so far, and I hope I won't need to work that much on this website from now on: I am starting a couple new projects and I want to focus on them!

After another 20 days of doing not much...

    Here's some stats:

Total number of articles published on the website: 105
People subscribed to the newsletter (after a bit more than a month): 93
    Money earned in December: ~540$

The stats for December look good:
    Schermata 2017-01-06 alle 17.30.10.png

I had less visits and more orders than in November, and I ALMOST reached my daily goal. I know that December is a special month, but I'm quite happy with the results.

The visits are increasing and I start to see some traffic coming from social networks, from the newsletter, and an increase in traffic from search engines. Here's a graph with the sessions:
    Schermata 2017-01-06 alle 17.32.59.png

I am quite optimistic that I will reach my goal in 3-4 months.

What I want to do now:

I am working on a few other websites trying to achieve the same results. In the meantime I'll keep writing articles for this website, following the suggestions coming from Search Console.

I also want to start targeting more difficult keywords: yesterday I wrote an article about a breaking news in the niche, I did a couple of comments, submitted the post to Google and the page was indexed in 3rd positions in a couple of hours.
I think that now the website is considered reliable and authoritative by Google, and that I can target
keywords with 10-20k searches per month.

Happy New Year everybody! And keep grinding!

    Here's my January update.

I created a few articles for the website while working on other projects. Now I have 115 articles on the website, each and everyone written with users in mind, with a lot of good content in them: the articles are each around 800-1500 words long, and some of them receive around 50-80 visits per day. I know that's not much, but I am fighting for some competitive keywords and I hope to make it in another couple of months.

    Some numbers from January:

    Schermata 2017-02-07 alle 10.40.45.png

The numbers are lower than December, but way higher than November, and that's really good. December is probably the best month in Italy for online shopping, and even if November was black friday's day I managed to make a good 130% more in earnings and around 70% more in orders. The increase in the number of orders is lower than the increase in earnings, and I hope that it means that the website is seen as an authority one.

Now the website looks like an authority source in its field: I have a newsletter, I have around 100 comments on articles, I have a facebook page that's running smoothly.

What I want to do now:

The next step is creating a whole new category of articles aimed at a specific category of users. The good thing is that I don't need to create that much content, because users will make it (interviews). I hope this brings in some backlinks, too.
