    So the story goes...

    1. We weren't showing up in the local pack for our main keyword because (or so we thought) we aren't actually close to the city center.
    2. We fixed up our local places page and took out many "over-optimized" keywords, mainly for the city.
    3. 2 weeks later we are showing up in the #2 position for the local pack
    4. About 3 weeks ago we drop out completely of the local pack for our main keyword, not even last.

What is going on? Anyone have any fixes on this? Insights?

    Much appreciated.

Do you have GA installed? What's your bounce rate?
Do you have a lot of non-local backlinks?
What types of sites are ranking well?

Yes we do have GA installed. Bounce rate is 5.4%. Yes we have allot of non-local back links. Sites that are ranking well are in the exact same industry, same business model, same everything.

Which sort of implies that bounce rate isn't killing you and your site isn't spammy.

I have some non-local backlinks and I'm wondering if that isn't the reason why I'm not #1 in local results (vs. #2 through #4 in organic). I think the non-local backlinks send Google a message. Are you including the city name or other geographic indicator in your kw?

    Some ideas:
    1) Deleting the non-local baclinks
    2) Maximizing local citations
    3) Other SEO efforts (onpage)

Also, I read a post last night that said that you can get a boost by adding content in a 2nd language. Don't know where you are, but here in TX the natural choice would be spanish. I'm considering doing this & see what happens.

Also, have you done any kw analysis? Frequently I find local sites competing for high-competition kw's and there are better ones that have no competition at all.

How many kw's are you optimized for, and is your rank all pretty much the same with all of them?

Googe Analytics, and "Bounce Rate" in general is the rate at which visitors to your site either back-out of the window, or close the window (vs. dwelling on the site for a minimum period of time, or clicking deeper into the site. There are specific specs on what a "bounce" is and is not, but that's the general idea. It's an indicator to Google on whether or not a person that clicked a particular site from the SERPs actually got to what they were looking for. Low bounce rate = good. 5 percent is very good. Almost unbelievable. My bounce rate is about 40 percent.

Have you got all other aspects of your Local listing filled in? This includes:
    - Videos
    - Photos
    - Coupons
    - Open times
    - Website link obviosuly
    - last but probably most important, is getting reviews from customers.

It could be any number of local search factors. Best thing you can do is make sure you google places listing follows the guidelines (I've seen a lot of listings get taken down for this) and work on all the other ranking factors.
