He started his company at 16 and then sold it to ValueClick for $40,000,000 two years later. A few years later, he started another company and sold it to Yahoo! for $300,000,000. He now lives in a $7,000,000 apartment and drives a white Bentley. Pretty inspirational, eh?

i really think, that this guy did some really really blackhat things, before making it that big. I mean, at 16, we don't even know what we are supposed to do, plus where did all the who gave him that much money to invest, since his family was so poor.

http://articles.sfgate.com/2008-10-26/living/17136276_1_pyramid-scheme-east-san-jose-years-of-hard-work says he hired a programmer from London for $10,000/month when he first started his website and then got his first advertiser for $30,000 a short while after that. The details aren't too clear, but maybe he talks more in detail in his book: The Dream.

But obviously he had some previous experience with making money online, because you can't just "suddenly" have an idea and go hire somebody for $10K a month.

Though I try not to think about the details too much and just look at the big picture.

He is a great and smart guy. Not everyone can do the same thing like he did. Very inspiring!

Yeah...right - from (not so, if he could afford $10k developer) rags to riches. Old story, besides the guy is 27 now...

    I read his book =)

The only blackhat thing he did was to grow some balls. He was 16, had no money, but had alot of balls. He called up the guy with the software and told him that he will pay him 30k in 2 months and wrote it in contract. He also did the same for the website building.

This guy Gurbaksh is doing a major push right now trying to promote himself as a motivational speaker and author. In fact I came across this same Oprah video via a PPC advert on Facebook. I can relate to him as my background is similar to his, i.e parents immigrating from Punjab. I did find his story inspirational.

I doubt he did anything blackhat but started the right companies in the right industry. Just look at the financial success of Google to see how hot internet advertising is despite recession. It's still a market with huge potential.

I first heard of him watching a TV show where millionaires live on welfare for a week. He came across as a dick (the producers idea?) at first, especially with the big gold G above his bed which I now find endearing. By the end of the week he was tollerable again. The worth of a human isn't financial it is the sum of their experience. Inspiring. (Except for the Bentley perhaps).

That's when I first heard of him too.

He was the only one that paid out less than $100k, I think he paid out $90k (and you had to pay out a minimum $100k). Most other people on that show paid way more, some paid as much as $300k and Gurbaksh was the richest of them all.
