Downloads | Protection ?

I actually have 2 questions/requests...

1.) I have winRARed and uploaded a file to my website in a special directory. I've made the directory "public" I suppose its called but when I give the direct link

But regardless they'd get a 404 error page. So how do I go about making it actually available to people? Like for this specific file I wouldn't mind putting it into the public FTP access folder I suppose: ftp://ftp.DOMAIN_NAME or whatever but even then it gives them a 404 error. I'm just confused about this.

This also ties into my ebook that I'm selling, but want in a 'PROTECTED' folder that is passworded but ties into question 2:

2.) Is there a script, program, or utility that will allow the password on that 'PROTECTED' folder to be automatically put on the users computer on a successful purchase so they can begin downloading the file (whether it be automatically or go to a download page) which in either case, as question 1, how do I go about doing that?

I heard something about DL Guard, is that worth it?

What control panel are you using on your server? If it's CPanel, you'd upload your files into public_html. The download link would be If you uploaded it to public_html.

I think DL Guard or MyDigitalDispatch may be what you're looking for.

I tried that and myself and everyone else I've asked to test gets a 404 message


The DL Guard, is it any good? Worth it?

SmartDD dot com has a free verion which allows you to have 5 downloads from each install (before you need to pay for the pro version) this then puts the file below the public_html directory which protects the download.

Having a password protected directory is only good untill that password is put in here etc and putting it in your public_html will allows hackers to get in there as well...

I might go check out DL Guard as see what that is like

Okay this is resolved now. Got DLGuard and works perfectly

amember is best, but you can also setup a password if you know how to use httpaccess

DLGuard works great. love the way you dont have to touch paypal at all the setup a buy link.
DLG does it all. and if you want to change the price, that is so easy as well.

and it works across multiple domains. Load DLG in one and have downloads coming from various domains
