    Ok quick question.

After 12 years I finally bought a Brand New Computer. I don't know why I waited so long, just stubborn I guess. Any way, I have my first dvd burner, I want to burn some movies. I have questions cuz I am out of the loop, but by the looks of thing, there are alot of people out of the loop. So here is some questions I have, and many others are wondering the same thing.

    1. What the hell is a torrent and how do you use it?

    2. I want to download a movie, and burn it to a dvd so I can watch it on my dvd player, what are the easiest steps to take?

    3. My dvd burner has dual layer, wtf?

    4. Favorite software for dvd burning?

I believe this thread will help thousands of people if you have some answers. Please post!!

    Ok listen:

First thing is to grab either utorrent or limwire. Once you get either you can start using torrent sites. I use limewire pro but that's just my preference. If you download the free version of limewire from their site you can then use it to download the pro version from a torrent site.

Once you are set up with limewire ( or utorrent) head on over to thepiratebay.org

Some people will scream demonoid at you all day long but I haven't been impressed with it personally. TPB is much easier to use and there are some really good contributers there.

I don't really need the plr stuff but thanks for offering.

I'm not goint to walk you through how to download a torrent because if you can't follow the instructions given on the torrent site then you really do need to sell your PC and take up knitting or something.

Go do this to get startd and when you are on your way with a couple downloads you can PM me and we'll start talking about the best sources for whatever you're looking for and the additional tools that you will need to convert all of those movies to DVD format.

By far the guys at slysoft.com have the absolute best dvd copying/burning software on the planet, including BluRay format! Check em out! I also use Nero for burning mpg to dvd format when needed.

    Hey jdownloads,

Must be the weekend and folks are slow in replying :)

Here are some responses and sites (in red) that might give you a start:

    1. What the hell is a torrent and how do you use it?
A torrent can be used to refer to:

    a) a peer to peer file sharing protocol
    b) a software that allows you to upload and download torrent sources/streams
    c) the actual "chunk" of data that makes up part of a digital file (e.g. a PDF file, an mp3 file, a video file such as avi, mpg, flv, a word document file, a game exe file etc.)

You can type "what is a torrent" (without the quotes should work) in g00gle
or have a look at these sites:
(Remember to remove the *; change xx to tt, and the zero to o, where applicable) :p

    i) hxxp://en.wikipe*dia.org/wiki/BitTorrent
    ii) hxxp://goo*gle.about.c0m/od/t/g/torrentsdef.htm
    iii) hxxp://www.what-is-torrent.c0m/

You can also go to www.scribd.c0m and read BitTorrent for dummies (i think there is a copy there).

    2. I want to download a movie, and burn it to a dvd so I can watch it on my dvd player, what are the easiest steps to take?

I think you'll figure out the many different ways to download movies in various formats (e.g. avi, mpeg, wmv etc.) . :)

To burn DVDs, you'll need to:

    i) Have a DVD writer drive
ii) Have a software that you can use to burn DVDs with.
iii) Some time to learn and burn

    - I don't do this myself so I can't give you recommendations off hand  but I found this software after searching on g00gle, which you can have a look at:

    hxxp://www.avs*media.c0m/DVDCopy/index.aspx
(Remember to remove the *; change xx to tt, and the zero to o, where applicable)

Most importantly, you can go to www.download.c0m and / or g00gle.com and search for "dvd software" or "dvd burner software" (without quotes should do fine, i think).

    3. My dvd burner has dual layer, wtf?

    a) This just means that your DVD drive can write DVDs with Dual Layers.

Dual Layer DVDs can store data on 2 layers of the DVD i.e. they have greater storage capacity (as opposed to the usual 4.7GB on a single layer DVD, I think dual layer DVDs allow you to store 8.5GB of data or movies).

    i) Just check out this article on wiki*pedia or about dot com:

    - hxxp://en.wiki*pedia.org/wiki/DVD (Remember to remove the *; change xx to tt, and the zero to o, where applicable)

    - hxxp://desk*topvideo.about.c0m/od/glossary/g/DualLayerDVD.htm

ii) Alternatively, you can do your own search on g00gle.com by typing "dvd dual layer" or "what is dvd dual layer" (without the quotation marks should do fine, i think).

    4. Favorite software for dvd burning?

SonicDVD it (just type this term and search in g00gle) or Roxio CD and DVD burning software (hxxp://www.roxio.c0m/enu/products/allproducts.html) might be one of the softwares you can use.

Again, I don't do this much, if at all; so I can't even give you a good response off the top of my head ( :p hence the searches I had to do on g00gle). I also mentioned my 2 cents about this above but here it is again:you also can go to www.download.c0m and / or g00gle.com and search for "dvd software" or "dvd burner software" (without quotes should do fine, i think).

Hope this gives you something to work with or on.

Have fun with your new computer and have adequate Internet security and antivirus protection, always, okay?

    Cheerio
P.S. Are ya an eastern, prairie or western Canuck?
Dun need to answer that, :) I'm just being chummy :p

If you are willing to pay some money (for the download quantity) you also can download at the usenet (newsgroups and forums). You can download with ADSL speed straight from the servers, it's anonymous and most downloads are rated. Sothe chances for downloading a virus are not to high...

I prefer to download the format divX (.avi) as the quality is pretty closed to dvd (if it is a good formatting). But at the usenet you'll find out quick the best uploaders (quality).

For burning I use nero (you can download it as well at the usenet :)

I prefer usenet regarding to torrents because of the speed and less viruses

Keep in mind most of the movies youre going to get are going to be in divx format, converting it to a DVD format is a major pain in the ass, or at least it was - things may have changed. You are better off buying a DVD player that plays DIVX , AVI, MPEG, format etc. I just bought a samsung upconverting dvd player from ecost for $50 and it looks just fine on my 50" plasma.

'...Some good information already posted but for me, the two most important issues are:

    1. You don't say if your new shiny computer is a Mac or Windows. Similar procedures for burning discs but easier and different software with a Mac. (If it's Windows, I strongly advise you to take it back, get a refund and purchase a Mac. Sorry about that, but I loathe the Windows Operating Platform).

    2. Skimmed over the posts and don't see anyone mentioning encoding.

I download a lot of U.K. and U.S. television series as I live in Thailand and it's the only way I can get to see them. (Yes, I can purchase some of them but it's actually quicker to download them as they wait for the full series to finish before making it available).

Once I have a completed download, I watch it on my Mac or Windows laptops, usually in bed, I don't bother to encode it. This means I cannot watch it on the LCD/Plasma screens. If you absolutely want to do that, you have to encode them to play on a DVD player, which is easy enough BUT you have to wait and depending on your computer speed, this can take minutes or even hours and hogs the RAM on your computer.

I have both Windows and Mac but by far, my preference is for the Mac. I find Limewire useless for downloading movies. To find movies or tv stuff use:
    Code:
    www.scrapetorrent.com
Scrapetorrent searches, or scrapes many, if not all, torrent websites so the chance of you finding what you want is greatly increased.

utorrent is considered to be the best Torrent client for Windows. Download free here:
    Code:
    http://utorrent.com/
I use Transmission for Mac but there are many others, including a built-in torrent downloader with the Opera browser. Transmission is also free and can be downloaded here:
    Code:
    http://www.transmissionbt.com/
If you do want to encode the downloaded torrent, on a Mac the ONLY software to use, because it's the best, is Roxio 'Toast' with which you can burn BlueRay and HD discs:
    Code:
    http://www.roxio.com/
Can't recommend Windows software for burning discs, but there is plenty available.

Please keep in mind that in most cases, downloading torrents of movies and tv stuff, you are breaking the law. If you make a habit of it, as I do, and want to avoid being targeted for legal action, and they are catching up with people, you need to download your torrents behind a proxy.

Wow, I have learned alot this weekend. I hope some people that had a lot of the same questions did as well.

Well guess what? I have 3 movies that I put onto disk this morning and they play in my dvd player. The quality is excellent!! I quickly reveiewed the disks for errors and everything seems a'ok.

I downloaded Jumper, Hellboy 2 and Kung Fu Panda for my girls.

I find if you are learning about something that you have alot of interest in, you can cram alot in a short amount of time.

I thank everyone for their posts (feel free to add more to this thread) and as promised, here are some plr products

Just out of curiosity, what was your old computer (how fast)? Man, not having a new computer, and just getting one is just like being released from prision after 12 years. Boy, I can't imagine the stuff you missed out on over the years. Anyway, good luck with the upgrades, hopefully with the money you make here, you can get a new computer every year or so!

And Yes long overdue, here is a link to 50 plr http://url-tiny.com/?plr

I had a huge dvd collection, most of which was stolen. I got a membership to netflix and bought 1Click DVD Copy Pro and have been very happy with it. I have copied over 300 dvds and only once have I come across a dvd that would not copy. You can check out the program at hxxp://w3.1*click*dvd*copy.c0m/in*dex.asp (take out the *s) I very highly recommend this program. There are alot of options when copying dvds with this software.
