Dormant Domain Purchases

Hi Guys,

I am busy starting a link strategy for one of my sites (Linkwheel / Backlinks / Squidoo etc) but also want to gather some relative traffic.

My question is, has anyone had any experience of purchasing domains in their sector and redirecting / adding links which are dormant to direct the traffic to their own site.

I know there are probably a host of domains on Yahoo Directory or DMOZ that would be worthwhile aproaching... my question would be...

Is there a way to check their traffic - Alexa maybe?

If I get a response what is the best way to evaluate a price for a website?

I have not done the linkwheel thing yet, although it does sound promising and I look forward to trying it...I buy old domains for some of my current websites. Go to freshdrop.net and browse the names in your niche that are for sale (expiring domains are what I go after). Sometimes it's hard to predict the amount of traffic that a domain will give you. I often use a variation of compete/alexa/wayback...Bid or buy on the ones with strong backlinks (yahoo,dmoz,.edu,.gov) and I always say the older the domain, the better. GL

Ive purchased some good domain names through Freshdrop before but will use the traffic tab and obviously if they have Yahoo or DMOZ Directory links then all the better, I would prefer to target them around my niche so the traffic being forwarded will be relevant.

Can I ask, do you just do a perm 301 redirect from the domain to your new site or host content on there with links out.?

I've heard 301 is the best, I use the 301...just started doing this, got a nice geo+keyword(iowa+music) domain that I now rank well for those keywords in G, and overall helps with getting targeted traffic. Eventually you will not need much help from advertising platforms.

I have cpanel and also monitor the subdomain stats for referring sites, keywords, etc...

I use Google Analytics so hopefully that should suffice!

I have found some good ones with .edu / .gov so think i will check that one out.

Sorry to bump this but I have another question..

I have found a few domains that have dmoz listings and yahoo directory listings in a similar field to myself, can I ask then would the correct process be to purchase this dormant domain and then perform a 301 permanent redirect?

I am obviously keen to keep the value the page has built up in the past, but will this be deleted by Dmoz or Yahoo Directory / and or does it carry over the weight as I would assume?

Why not go to the wayback machine, put the same content up ,then add some new pages pointing at your site?

This way you can build yourself a powerfull satellite that you can control and do a lot of things with. The Dmoz listing will certainley remain active although I think it will stay even if you only put the 301 redirect.

As for the Yahoo Directory listing, no. That's not gonna stick. The admission into the directory is $299 per year. When the year that is paid for ends, the fee comes up again. And since there's nobody left to pay it, bye bye Yahoo Directory.
