I heard on here recently that blogs that stop making new content end up losing their rankings. Is that true? And what if the site isn't technically a blog? Like there's a lot of people that use WordPress. Are they in trouble?

It doesn't matter how the site is managed, but as a general rule site traffic bleads out if blogs stay dormant for longer. For some it takes a few months, others stay alive for years. In most cases negative link velocity is the most important factor for dormant sites to fall down in rankings. You could keep it alive for longer by building new links.

It depends upon what your blog is all about, if your backlinks are intact and if you continue building links and you rank in a popular niche then I dont think new content would matter.

Any proof? Can you show me one single blog that has been dormant for 10 years while gaining traffic?

I think that it's always better to keep it fresh and up to date. If anything people will see that it is active and are more likely to come back. As for losing rankings, it isn't all about content. I think you'd also need a steady stream of back links to keep your blog ranking and new content can't do any harm!
