Hostgator is doing the same as they want to avoid disputes from "hacked" accounts.

a better rule would be don't register with godaddy period.

I've yet to hear anything positive coming from that company when it comes to domain registration.

Yeah they check for cc frauds. It's to protect those whose cc has been stolen or hacked.

Whats wrong in providing them an ID? Btw, you can use Gift cards to avoid such questioning.

So many bad news with godaddy, just stay away from them. Asking ID for a domain registration is NOT normal and too much of a hassle.
There are more than enough other ways easier ways to verify if you are the owner of the card, like an automated phone call to card owner.

I have been using GoDaddy for a few years, register lots of domains and I live in Indonesia with no problems. About to switch to NameCheap when there is SOPA issue but now GoDaddy is SOPA haters too, so I will stay unless something bad happen. Using Verified Paypal and (my brother) CC too with no problem.

Ehh, they're not so much SOPA haters as much as neutral on SOPA because it was hurting their business. They never came out against SOPA (that I know).

    NameCheap all the way, OP.

This happened to me when I bought a $20(or $25 cant remember) gift card from GoDaddy. A few hours after paying for the item, they asked for my passport. Then a few hours they asked for my latest credit card bill.

They sent my gift card after a few hours.
