Aurite folks, wasn't sure where to post this question so thought the lounge is the best place since anything goes :)

I was wondering if anyone here uses a dongle for internet access? If you do, does the dongle get a fresh IP everytime you disconnect and reconnect it?

I'm not sure if all of them do or not, so if yours does could you tell me which company is your provider.

You mean connecting to your router wirelessly? No, you do not get a new IP by just disconnecting.
 
I use an O2 dongle sometimes when talktalk is playing up as it sometimes does and I'm near sure the ip stays the same but I will find out for sure and let you know.

@Jared255,the o.p. is talking about connecting to the internet thru a mobile telephone network and not a wireless router.You get this dongle which you put a sim card in and are assigned a number to get online

Yeah that's exactly what I'm looking to find out. Instead of getting my virgin broadband remoced and have the hasslfe of getting BT DSL installed to get fresh IP's, buyinh one of these dongles may be an easier option.
 
Get a free laptop with it, I use it for all my submissions :)
 
I've got a vodafone one lying around i'll check it out later for you.

Heard about this trick here not too long ago and tested it on my tmobile dongle and worked.

I think that connection, download, upload and loadtime speeds are alot slower using these - Keep that in mind.

actually I've just tested this with my O2 dongle today about 6 times and got the same i.p. each time so bear that in mind o.p.
 
If you use Vodafone, it gives you the same IP address each time unless you change the settings to "use a manual IP address" and entered it as 000.000.0.0

Might be similar with other providers

Keep us updated this sounds like a very nice method for a static ip address.
