Im a little confused and would like some clarification, is it reasonable to target a niche in your own local area? Even though the niche is very competitive globally?
What Im thinking of doing is finding a niche which is competive globally but not competitive locally with still all the other commercial intent properties.
is this reasonable or will my competition still be the global market?
I'm seeing that google displays listings from your local area first? Regardless of there domination.

    Thanks

It makes sense to target it from a local perspective only if there are local results like Google places results being displayed.

If the same global results are being displayed, there is no real benefit and it won't be any easier for you to rank.

Yes the local searches are much less than global searches, the question I have is the competition still the global market? For example if I optimise my site for my country am I most likely to to beat the number 1 site that's dominating it globally?
