domains with numerics w/keyword

I know there are some people who get creative and some just use numbers. something like 365tennisballs.com or even something such as 1-800-shoe-day.com (random thought up names) Are these effective for ranking/keywording? I have a couple of domains I have in mind but wanted to have them with numbers and/or hyphens.

Numbers are better than hyphens. But don't go for random numbers. Go for something like 365 (Number of days in year), 247 (24 hours, 7 days a week), 1800 (Toll Free #), 777 (Casinos, Gambling), 360 (as in 360 degrees) etc.

With numbers and hyphens in domains you want to be real careful.

Generally, in the domain industry, the appearance of a hyphen or a number in a domain will make it less valuable.

There are, however, lots of examples of sites with killer rankings that have hyphens or numbers in the domains.

If you use a hyphen, limit your domain to one hyphen only (though personally I would never buy a domain with a hyphen in it for an important project).

If you use numbers, try to have the keywords appear at the start of the domain and the numbers appear at the end, if possible...

The most important keyword(s) in the domain should always appear at the beginning.

Random numbers = Not Good
Generic Numbers = Better

It's easier to brand something that makes sense. For example... "365fitness.com" whereas a random string of numbers... "194fitness.com" doesn't really help.

As far as SERPs are concerned, neither one has a considerable algorithmic benefit. CTRs... possibly.

In most of the cases, yes. Because Keyword+Suffix is much better combination than Prefix+Keyword. As Keyword+Suffix combination is more easily remember-able and sounds better than Prefix+Keyword.

Domains like xyz4u also do good

Random numbers won't look good also won't sound good that may create problem for you for ranking.. but if logical and something generic numbers are being used then they are much better, for example for the purpose of shortening we can use "2" instead of "to" and "4" instead of "for" there are many domains like that which have numbers in their domain and are ranked well at a good position on search engines.

"room4rent"
"car4hire"
"care4hire"
"someonespecial4u"

so in the end, it's all about content and optimization not numbers but yet better be off from random numbers they may spoil your hard work. Good luck

adding numbers at the end of domain will be better than at start imho.
