Hoping for some input on this...
Let's say the keyword I'm targeting is flak jackets.

A website is a website, and while a root domain does provide some extra sense of security to a user, I'm wondering how big of a deal it is for SEO.

Example (ignoring duplicate content penalties) - lets say all 3 of these sites have the same exact content:

They all contain the keyword in the URL, they all contain the same content, and all have the same back links.

What I'm trying to figure out is...

1.) Does having a keyword rich root domain really matter as long as the subdomain is keyword rich... (in the eyes of SERP ranking, I could care less what people think - I want to know if this is part of the SEO algorythm)?

2.) Does having a dash in the subdomain (or domain for that matter) affect the keyword, or is it handled the same way it would be without a dash?

Reason I ask is because it seems ranking is all content/backlink dependent... And not having a root domain that has directly to do with your niche would allow for some play (in case the niche dried up, etc)...

I have a few subdomains that rank #1 in the keyword I'm aiming for, and actual domains exist for that keyword (which I outrank)...
