    I have a main page for my website. It's more of a splash page. I then have a forum on the subdomain so;

    website
    website/forums

    For example.

    Does the quality of content, tags on new threads and obviously the keywords picked up on my forum benefit the ranking for both that sub-domain and the first page?

    How does it work?

    Thanks!

    You've quoted a subdirectory not a subdomain.

    The contents of subdirectories are counted towards the rating for the domain as a whole, subdomain contents are not (unless there's interlinking).

    Google and Bing both dislike subdomains - Yahoo used to be OK with them, but that's irrelevant now.
