How would I check if an expired domain has had a history of spam links besides eyeing it on the wayback machine or putting it in ahrefs?

You can try Open Site Explorer by Moz for your all kind of link research. I know many of the users already know about it and of course it is known as very useful in that.

If you have only one, or few links i recommend you Digimetr, for few cents you can get metrics for Ahrefs, Majestic and Moz.

Right I know about these tools but there's nothing else I should be looking for? Like if the DA is fake or something?
