Does anyone know if there is a list a companies/brands that actively go after people who use their name within domain names. I have recently purchased a couple of domains that contain the name of certain products (unrelated examples - Wii, Canon) and thought it might be a good idea to check this before I spent too much time setting-up and promoting the sites.

Whatever list you compile, Ebay would be at the top. They even launched action (and won) against PurfumeBay.com, CoinBay.biz and others. So when it comes to domain trademarks, they are savage.

Your best bet is to look them up, for instance do things like:

    allinurl:canon

Then see how many non-official domains are running and using it for a similar purpose as yourself. Then do something like

    canon + domain dispute

To find other cases and take it from there, not knowing what domains you have it's all that can be suggested. Just be prepared to roll the dice and come off second best at any given time.

    Good luck.

I've been using a domain with ebay in it for almost a year, with no problems. It's an affiliate redirect though, so isn't indexed. They most likely don't know about it..

If they have deep pockets stay away. If they don't then you're likely safe. It takes lawyers on staff or retainer to protect trademarks.

    Hey Guys,

I have only had a problem with one company: Getresponse.

A couple of years back, I was really happy with GR (I was a paid user) and wanted to promote their affiliate program.

So I registered the domain name: get-response.c0m

Now, I never created a site and simply used the domain name to redirect right to the GR affiliate program.

About 11 months later (out of the blue) I get a Cease and Desist order from Getresponse. They want me to immediately transfer over rights to my domain name to them.

I tried and explained that I was a GR customer and was only using the domain name to redirect visitors to the GR affiliate program, but they didn't care. They wanted me to IMMEDIATELY give it to them.

I never did. I just let the domain name expire. Oh well.

    Ebay sucks...

My friend owns a few domains with Ebay in them and they bother my friend every year on his names. Ebay does not bother you though if you do not put up a website using the name.

Double oh shit, i just found a c/d in my Junk folder.."we are worried to find out taht you have registered a domain name with our brand in it...any attempts to sell, use or pass of this domain will not be taken lightly...we expect you to allow the site to expire w/o further use.

bastards! and only one day after I decided to sell it off on egay!
