I got my first legal dispute few days ago.

The thing is, only part of the domain name is infringing their trademark. It's 10 letter domain, with 4 letter acronym of university which they have trademark, but not the whole domain name. Does that matter?

How should I handle this? Since I'm not US citizen, do I need to care about their legal dispute?

I would have to see it to give a better opinion.
They may have the right to it.
Did they just email you? YOu can just ignroe it and pretend you didn't get it and wait for them to physically mail you something.
What is the site for? PBN or money site? If it's PBN they really can't do anything, just don't profit from it.

I'd probably just tell them to fuck off. If you're not stationed in the US they can take a hike.

Since it is a University they most likely have protected their name and variations thereof, as they can afford to do so.

The fact your domain name contains their mark (if indeed a registered trademark) does have merit. You can seek legal advise if your service/website is not in the same 'goods and service' class (IE: 042 deals with internet services in USPTO)

What service does the website in question provide?
Is your website associated with the University?

Search your country's Intellectual Property Office and see what comes up.

I'll PM you the domain. It's for PBN and it's not even up yet.

I'm from Europe, but have been living in Thailand last 3 years.

If it's PBN then who cares.
Look at paypalsucks.com. Don't you think Paypal would love to have that removed if they could?

    Oh nice! A Reddit user.

Also domainmadness, either sell it right now -- or don't and just build a small site on it. You don't want to waste money on starting a large project and having it taken down.

That's the plan - or at least somewhere around Asia.
