Hi there, I've seen a domain name I really want, however, I am unsure about contacting the seller about it, mainly because the domain name expires in december and by me contacting him, he might give me a ridiculous price, which I wouldn't be willing to pay/thus him renewing the domain for another year.

Say if the domain expires on the 15th, I backorder before then, 16th comes, he hasn't renew. What happens then? Does he have a grace period for him to be able to renew again? From the 15th, if he were not to renew, what are we looking at when it comes to snapping up the domain from a backorder?

    A month, 2 months more?

the domain name is great and should take off, the .co.uk/.org/.net are unregged.

    many thanks

There is a grace period after the domain expires. Might as well try to contact the seller unless you know for sure the owner isn't planning on doing anything with it. Since the seller will probably raise the price on you.

once it expires it goes into redemption period for about 30-45 days. Then it goes in deletion period which is about 1 week.

    Backorder it.

I'd say that if you found a domain worth buying which is not developed definitely contact the owner. If he did not develop it already you have a point that it's not worth too much for him so obviously he can let it go. There are several registrars that work with domain collection companies which get the domains as soon as they go into redemption and then try to sell it to the highest bidder so it's best to try your luck with the owner first.
