Lets take a quick moment to take a few notes on what research we do before buying an aftermarket domain!

Alright, you have found that great niche and your ready to buy that rock solid domain name... You've found one you like and before buying it, What steps do you take to know your not buying a "Lemon".

This should be interesting to sell the different "Due Diligence" we go through.

Check for trademark infringement. Defending a trademark case is expensive. If you are a corporation you MUST hire a lawyer, can't do it yourself!

What MrFleetwood say and Google Keyword Tool of course. I also pick something I really feel. Something that speaks to you is a good element.

Make sure that you will the niche if you wont outsource it. Also try something "catchy". You don't always have to select a name that describes the site unless you want to target an EMD for SEO purposes.

Friv for example is a well known flash game site and the word friv has nothing to do with games.

    Good luck

ALWAYS !!!! CHECK OUT THE HISTORY of domain name you are buying. Once I had bought domain name of scamming ptc website and it was banned by google (before I bought it off course), I didn't know it because it was in auction just for a domain name. Domain has never appeared in searches and adsense + adwords were disabled.

Look at sources like: compete.com (requires free account) and alexa.com to verify the traffic history.

Look at source like: majesticseo.com , check it with ScrapeBox's fake PR checker.

Check the domain out with sources like: SEM RUSH and SEO MOZ various tools (like Open Site Explorer) and make sure that ll the information checks out.

Had similar situation with an expired domain I purchased. I had to send a couple of requests to Google but once they saw that I had set up a site with real content they removed the ban. Still haven't gotten it to rank well yet but at least it's off the deindexed list.

I use The Wayback Machine to see if the owner(s) weren't up to anything nefarious.
