I want to start buying domains via auction however I cant figure out how to tell if traffic stats are faked/paid for.

Is there a definite way to tell if the traffic was bought before you buy the domain?

    thanks

well, google analytics should tell the source if its search traffic or not. but not all sellers let you see this. don't rely on alexa rankings.

You should also check how long each visitor was on the site on average. Many bots will only be there a few seconds. Real visitors are obviously there longer...

I don't think there is a definitive way.
A site could have good traffic without almost any searches in search engines. It depends on the site.
I think the most important thing is to try to evaluate the site before buying. In most cases (although not always) it's possible to judge the domain value.
If the domain name is dffbnjksklv something and there are not any rational traffic sources you are able to find, most probably the domain name does not worth buying.

Google analytics it's ofcourse the first thing to check. Also make sure to ask seller as many as possible details about traffic, average time/visitor on pages.

As teeniegenie already said, it can help to detect if traffic is good or not.
