The sense of loyalty is one thing, but what's more impressive is the sense of smell! Is there any other possible explanation on how the dog found the grave site, aside from the story being a hoax?

I think there is more about animals than what has been scientifically studied. One time my youngest was about three years old. I was outside with him and the dogs doing yard work. I turned around and my son was on the second step of the pool ladder. As soon as I called his name and yelled to get down, one of my labs took off, knocked my son off the ladder, and sat on him. It happened so fast. I was running and the dog did all that before I got to my son. When I got to him, the dog just got up and walked away nonchalantly. That dog knew the pool was dangerous. He just knew.

The dog could have also known you wanted your son to stop whatever he was doing by the tone of your voice and body language, they understand both those things. And since he was loyal to you he took action.

About what can be scientifically studied, we don't even have the full science out yet on their olfactory system, it's that complex. Their sense of smell dominates their whole brain.
