Theme is not a direct SEO factor. It is an indirect factor based on user experience. If your site looks good, readers may like it more and give you better user experience metrics like a lower bounce rate or longer time on page, which then google may use to reward your site in the serp.
To make your site look professional to rank better, pick a theme that is recent and well made. But this is not a direct factor in SEO, you will not see huge rank swings based on your theme.

there are so many themes to choose from, depending if it is free or paid, and depending on your taste and preferred layout.
one tip is look a site you like, and use their theme.
other than that, in wordpress you can see many free themes and you can do install preview, so you can test how it looks.

No it's not a factor, the "SEO" theme is a myth, apart from if your theme is so bad that people bounce off or it loads slowly. Both unlikely with modern responsive themes.

It's the on page stuff that matters, content, links, layout, images.

So any thtme with plugins that optimise those things will work.

I think they do have a impact, here's why. When I was in research phase for my Niche I found this guys site that ranked in the top 5 for a in-demand keyword with no backlinks, irrelevant content- basically no content, and a irrelevant product for the keyword. The site was a 1 page incomplete website with basically no info just a keyword in the site name. I reached out and tried to buy the site because I knew he was making basically $0. When I used BoldGrid my site started ranking when I asked them not to rank.

I think code has some things to with it.

I think coding does to, I have a list of code hacks.

A good designed website always gets attention, A more informative website lacks that when it is not presented in a proper manner. We have got several theme providers online and make use of them. A minimalistic website can do magic if done properly.

Theme/style doesn't necessarily matter directly.

What can matter is the way that a theme uses tags / how it actually creates the layout or style. For example, a theme that wraps headings in h1/h2/h3/h4/h5/h6 tags might look the same as a theme that wraps them in something like <div class='heading-level-1'></div>, but the actual correct tag usage may be understood better by search engines.

I got your point. Thanks :)

GURU's who says that the theme is not important... what if the theme is not mobile frendly or has alot of js's?

Make sure the theme is mobile responsive, pages load fast and it actually looks appealing to the visitor.

This is why theme is important unless you want to go clean it up yourself. I am taking a Wordpress Site building Course a lot of theme are lacking simple tweaks that improve speed.

Theme only matters if it is: too slow, affects bounce rate negatively, isn't adaptive/mobile, if it otherwise ham strings you.

Theme Only Matter For Site Speed & User Experience. If Your User Experience is Bad Than There is Much Possibility of High Bounce Rate and Many Experts Consider Bounce Rate As Ranking Factor.
Indirectly You Can Consider it But Little Bit

It's the features of the theme that can be a problem. For example stuff like breadcrumbs that stuff keywords all over the place, lack of responsiveness and so on. But from my experience, people mostly screw up their sites with various plugins and keywords stuffed all over the place, rather than theme itself.
