Quite curious but does paying for facebook likes really have a positive effect?

I'm not a huge fan of facebook and don't really trust fb but after reading bhw and seeing some value in having an fb page, I recently started a facebook fan page and so far have gotten about 20 likes. My competitors have been on facebook for what seems like a year and they have hundreds of likes. The more the likes the better the credibility... Currently, I'm thinking of boosting the number of likes artificially just to make it seem that I'm on par.

I've done some research on several fb like providers and they do seem very tempting but I still feel a risk of purchasing likes. So my second question... is it worth paying for likes for the money site? Or is there some kind of technique on how to run a like campaign.

    Thanks for reading.

It depends on what you mean by 'work'...

With social-based marketing, social-proof is very important. Therefore, a page with a lot of likes/fans etc. automatically 'looks' more believable and trustworthy (to the non-SEO community anyway!)

I always put a few thousand likes/fans etc towards any new property that's supporting an SEO campaign. It gives the impression of age/authority, even if it doesn't exist.

    Yes and no...

Yes - because face it people are more likely to "like" your page, site or product if they see 3000 likes as compared to 20 likes

No - because in all probability the "likes" that you buy are not real people. So you will not have an active community.

But your fake likes will get you real likes.

Instead of spending a bomb on getting likes try free options first or try sorting through gigs on fiverr...look for addmefast and similar

It can be helpful for you if likes are coming from people located in your area, or having interest similar to your product/services offered.

buying likes will not get you active users, even real likes get something like 1 in 1000 commenting, if you have a good facebook person page you can try and start some competitions from there and maybe friends will like and interact. I tried that recently on an account that had 4500 friends, the fanpage had 2000 likes, ran a comp and got 300more likes and quite a bit of interaction

If you have a local Business buy real geo targeted likes or use FB AD's or sponsored posts later will cost you but can also help you with branding

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the advice.

Would any of you recommend doing this for a real business/money site or blasting these artificial likes on a 2nd tier site?
