If I'm trying to rank my homepage for a specific KW, does the content I'm pumping out have to be optimized for that KW in order to help me rank better? Or does it not matter?

Yep sure does :) First paragraph is often said to be the most important (this is assuming the rest of your site is optimised for the keyword), doesn't mean it needs to be covered with repetitions of keywords though!

Ideally you want your KW in the title (at the beginning), in your first sentence, your last sentence and again in the body at least once but not too many times, depending on the length of the particular post/article.

It matters, and it matters a lot.

You have to target a KW and write your article around it. Do you think its possible to rank for "Ice fishing equipment" with a unique article about "Best baseball bats"??? :)
If you're using Wordpress, there is a plugin called SEOPressor which may help you in this regard.

    Cheers,
    Bk...

Ya, it matters for sure.. This is the biggest mistake I made when I started IM. I thought if i wrote quality content G would send me traffic. NOT TRUE, G is a stupid bot that needs to have keyword phrases stuffed up its a*s.
