I noticed something with some of my websites and needed some information about it.
Actually, one of my websites is in french.
When I search for a particular keyword on GOOGLE(dot) com or google(dot co dot za), my website appears on the 1st page.

When I visite, google(dot)fr , it is on the 3rd page.

I am a bit perplexed. I changed my target audience in google webmaster to FRANCE.
Is there anything else that has to be done? Does my hosting server IP determine whether I get listing preference in france for example? I am in South Africa and I am also on the first page in google dot co.za

The only place I remember having put my current location is google analytics.

well did you consider .com is mainly english targeted so ur french search will rank higher ? you go to .fr and ur competing to ur search term(i suppose its french right ? )

so very simple explanation. type a french word in .com then go type it in .fr and ull see what i mean.

    still, that doesn't matter either.

I outrank a lot of .de / .fr (for france and germany) with .com's.

It happens a lot that some sites rank higher on google International than google local, it's not "bad" it's just the way it is.
Happens to me a lot, but changing hostings and changing TLDs will only make your rankings go lower.
    happened to me too.

so, is there any other tips you can give to start climbing in google (fr). I'm already doing some seo of my articles, profile links, commenting..
Having said that, my website is just 10 days old i think.
Any idea how long it can take to climb the ladder?

Actually I saw a video that would disagree, any comments?

This guy says that server location by IP address does affect ranking.

I'd have to disagree with that video, as I've seen very small local companies rank higher in my city than major companies. The only thing they have different (besides much less links/SEO) is that they're hosted on a server in my city.

As far as countries go, I'd imagine it's the same thing. If you're targeting a specific country hard, I would try to get hosting in that country.

From my experience server IP effects rankings.

If you host your server on a french IP i can pretty much guarantee you will see better results in Google France.
