Does listening to too much music make you dumb?

Hello everyone. The main reason I created this thread was to ask you, do you think obsessing over music with lyrics makes you dumb? The reason I'm asking this is because I noticed that listening to too much music has began to play with my mind.

I listen, or used to listen to a lot of hip/hop and punk rock. There was absolutely no way that you could stop me from listening to those two genres. But over time I noticed that whenever I was reading or doing something that requires concentration I'd automatically recite rap lyrics in my head and I'd suddenly lose focus. Whenever I read something I would also associate a random word with a random rap line.

So what did I do to fix this? Last month around December the 15th I stopped listening to music altogether. The first week I had a strong urge to listen to music but now I don't really care to listen to music at all. I don't know if I'm imagining it but I'm also able to concentrate more. Unfortunately my brain still compulsively recites lyrics from time to time, but I've learned to ignore it. Tell me what you think!

TL;DR: Figured out I was obsessed with music. Music took over my thinking pattern and focus. I stopped listening to music with lyrics altogether.

Asking this question actually answer you :) *joke*

Well tbh, i don't know about music but what i'm sure about is google. i've read a study where it demonstrated that the speed to access an information has a straight impact on your long run focus.

For exemple would you be able to read a book now ?

That said, the mind is built to focus efficiently for 50-55 minutes, after that you have some lack of attention at some level.

Dealing with music, i'd say that there is an impact dealing with the kind of music you are listening when you are under 7.

Rap and such and i wouldn't recommend it before 15-16, but it is more a personality matter. Well, this is the kind of control i'd do on my children there is no study to emphasize this.

Dealing with your peculiar case, i'd say that music isn't the problem but the relationship you have with it. Any obsession is bad for focus ;)

Listening music you know by heart while your work is not a good idea. There are some music which stimulates the focus part, but i'd bet you wouldn't like it.

EDIT : Might seem as a total non-sense :/, but it is hard to sum up in 3 lines :p

Get yourself into the wonderful world of electronic dance music. Electro, dubstep, house. Sure there are tracks with lyrics as well but there's a lot that don't have them.

Music can dumb you up if the music is too "colourful"... your attention span drops if you listen to music with 100 instruments going on at the same time, when you stop listening the music and try to concentrate, you will lack in stimulants and you brain tends to wander off the subject.

Listening shoothing deeb beat slow music with yelling nature would be good music for the brain, you wont over stimulate your brains so reading a book wont bore your head.

This is just my theory, have other theories about human personality growth and music.

not true, sorry. music with voices will drop your focus. Instrumental songs will do the opposite. i learned it in a brain waves seminar. ;)

Yeah, you bring up some good points. It got to the point where I was pretty much listening to music 24/7 and everything that wasn't as equally stimulating came off as boring to me. Whenever I would read I'd get the urge to listen to music instead. I'm not listening to music anytime soon but when I do it sure as hell isn't going to have lyrics in it.

no music is an enjoyment and I believe it helps you in many ways, for instance "STRESS", it kills stress and I listen to music a lot and I'm sure many others do too.

But maybe if you listen to a certain kind of music it maybe can make you dumber.

Don't get me wrong I know that music has some beneficial factors to it, like making you more social, happy, relaxed, etc. Because of punk, I got to meet a lot of my best friends in the punk community, I'm not against it. But if you also rely on it too much, like for example listening to music every time you feel a negative emotion you'll become dependent on it to make you happy.

"In the beginning there was the word", the word was sound, the formative vibration. Look into the work of Hans Jenny, "cymatics", the kind of music we listen to has much greater impact upon us than we yet realize.

Does anybody know good music for programming?
Something like trance/house without vocals and in good quality.

I need something to block out all the distracting sounds/noise...

I do not recognize a musical genre to have significant impact on intelligence qualifier. Therefore such a claim is believed not to be valid. My favorite music is potato

Yeah, listen to some Prokofiev when you are trying to concentrate - not disturbing yet still interesting.
