Does it matter if the homepage goes to http://www.companyname.com/index if redirects are set up?

I have a client who's homepage is currently set to http://www.companyname.com/index. There is a redirect set up going from http://www.companyname.com to http://www.company.com/index and likewise the non www redirects to www. Normally I would have the homepage set up to http://www.companyname.com but as there are 301 redirects set up, won't the links pass across so will it matter that it is back to front other then it goes against convention?

I don't know why it has been set up this way but I am struggling to justify why it needs changing! Thoughts please

So, is your question how to change it so it doesn't redirect from just the domain name to the domain name with /index at the end?

Make sure you select either including www or not of the site of your client through a 301 in htaccess. Beside that, make sure that you set the same format in google webmaster tools. Before getting these two things done, don't change anything to make sure google picks up everything first.

If you have questions about the 301 in htacess hit me up in PM and I'll provide you an example.

Nope, my question is should I change it rather than how. If you type in http://www.companyname.com it will redirect to http://www.companyname.com/index. I don't know why this redirect has been done but my question is should i change it or does it not matter seeing as the links will pass across through the 301 redirect

No problems with the redirects, i just want to know if there is any point changing the redirect so it doesn't redirect to /index like it does currently

If it's a full 301 redirect, there's obviously no point. Just personally I find it much better if the /index isn't added on the homepage. From a pure SEO perspective, there shouldn't be too much of a difference as the 301 is internal.

From a user perspective, the http://www.companyname.com is preferable, but no reason to change it if it's always been that way and if planning to build links, these are built to the /index page.

The links are built to http://www.companyname.com. Will this matter?
