i have seen a lot of blogs or websites that have a big section in the sidebar devoted to keywords, listing like 100 keywords. does this really help your SEO or does it hurt by making the page look too spammy?

this site was a site another user here showed me as an example of a good theme/site on wordpress that targets one keyword. at the bottom there is an area called tags and he just filled up an area full of keywords... is this good or bad to do? it just seems like the kind of thing google wouldn't like so i wanted to ask you guys.

That's just a tag cloud, each of those had been tagged via a post at least once. Of course it's good to tag your posts with relevant tags. If it were just a straight up keyword list than no, I wouldn't do it.
